About Stephanie

Who Am I?

I'm a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV). I've worked in Ukraine for two years as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher. I taught English to students from 4th-11th grade. Additionally, I was a tutor, assisted in academic competition preparation, and held clubs for the students.

I have a Bachelor's in English Literature with a minor in communications and I have a Master's of Social Welfare. I received scholarships and high honors for both programs.

I served as the editor of the school newspaper for three years, worked in the English Tutor Center for two years, and I interned at the Long Island Pulse Magazine in 2006.

I'm a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) who has worked in inner city schools, independent living centers, fundraising for national non-profits, and most recently helping people with developmental disabilities. I am also a freelance editor for a publishing house and I write product descriptions for websites.

What You Can Expect From Me

Our first meeting will be to discuss your goals, timeframe, and abilities. We'll sort out how often to meet based on your goals. I'll periodically ask for feedback to ensure you're satisfied and adjust if you aren't. I'm here to help you and I want you to succeed. You can expect some homework from me to improve your skills in between lessons. No matter what, I will expect you to do your best when you work with me and you can expect the same from me.

The Fun Stuff

On a more fun note, I love to be creative-I sew, knit, crochet, paint, color. I roller skate for fun. My favorite writers are Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Katherine Ann Porter, Edith Wharton, Stephen Crane, and many others. I enjoy the American short story. I also enjoy reading books about global issues.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Teacher for two years in the Peace Corps. I have worked full time in classrooms of 3-25 students. I have written lesson plans that focus on the four main skills- reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I have prepared students in Ukraine for academic competitions, exchange programs in English, and national exams.

I use the communicative method, but occasionally do direct translation. I use a lot of pictures, gestures, and charade-type methods. I believe communicating with these is the best way for the memory to retain the information. I myself have learned Ukrainian this way and rather than simply translate words in my head, I can speak freely because I focused on the meaning of the word in context, not the direct translation. This does not mean I do not explore other methods of teaching, but this is the main way I teach ESL.

I create many of my own resources, and adapt them to the student's needs and the lesson topic.
I play communicative games including charades, pictionary, question games, rhyming games, and vocabulary games. I adjust the games for children to adults, and I have taught Adults English Lessons. The adults enjoyed the games as well as the children.
