About Stephanie

Hi!

I'm a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV). I've worked in Ukraine for two years as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher. I taught English approximately 18 hours a week for students from fourth through eleventh grades (there is no 12th grade in Ukraine). Additionally, I was a tutor, assisted in academic competition preparation, and held clubs for the students. I wrote many lesson plans, and tried to use current and interesting topics to teach grammar and vocabulary. I can provide lesson plans upon request.

Prior to my Peace Corps service, I went to college and studied English Literature. I graduated with a 3.7/4.0 GPA, was on the Dean's List, and graduated with honors. For three years, I was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, editing, writing, and working closely with students to improve their articles. I also was an English tutor for freshmen in the Tutoring Center. I also interned at the Long Island Pulse Magazine in 2006.

I am a creative person who tries to utilize all resources to improve education. I believe in listening to a students' opinion, and using their interests to help them learn. I try to make lessons applicable to the age and level of the student I'm working with.

For example, the 8th grade English class in Ukraine was not enthusiastic about their lessons, stopped doing homework, and claimed they were bored. I had listened to their conversations before class, and discovered that most of the class enjoyed the "Twilight" series. I created lesson plans based on grammar, vocabulary, writing, and conversational skills for several lessons. If one or more students did not do their homework, the class didn't watch the movie. Every day they had a short quiz. The entire class began doing their homework, and passing their quizzes. They were once again interested in English, and participating in the lessons.

I am also a strict teacher. I believe that students (especially in high school) should be prepared for lessons. I expect a student to try their best because I will do my best to help the student succeed.

On a more personal note, I like to knit, read, write, cook and bake. I love to learn languages though- I've studied Spanish (in high school and am currently sharpening these skills), Latin (high school and college), a semester abroad introduced me to Czech, and after two years in Ukraine, I'm still translating words in my head. I've worked at summer camps, have volunteered for after-school programs, and am planning on attending graduate school for social work in the Fall.

I love traveling and have lived in the Czech Republic (semester abroad) and Ukraine (Peace Corps), and have traveled to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Greece, Austria, England, Italy, all over Ukraine and Mexico.

Thanks for reading about me!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Teacher for two years in the Peace Corps. I have worked full time in classrooms of 3-25 students. I have written lesson plans that focus on the four main skills- reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I have prepared students in Ukraine for academic competitions, exchange programs in English, and national exams.

I use the communicative method, but occasionally do direct translation. I use a lot of pictures, gestures, and charade-type methods. I believe communicating with these is the best way for the memory to retain the information. I myself have learned Ukrainian this way and rather than simply translate words in my head, I can speak freely because I focused on the meaning of the word in context, not the direct translation. This does not mean I do not explore other methods of teaching, but this is the main way I teach ESL.

I create many of my own resources, and adapt them to the student's needs and the lesson topic.
I play communicative games including charades, pictionary, question games, rhyming games, and vocabulary games. I adjust the games for children to adults, and I have taught Adults English Lessons. The adults enjoyed the games as well as the children.
