My love of teaching and helping people to speak and write in English comes from having traveled and lived in France and Brazil for 15 years. I understand very well the challenges of learning a new language at the same time adapting to a new cultural environment. I am a certified ESOL/TESLA teacher from the Literacy Assistance Center in New York City and have taught ESOL, EFL, and financial literacy to foreign students, executives and immigrants for the last three years at several branches of the Queens Library. I am also experienced in teaching family literacy for families who want to learn English together.
I specialize in helping beginner, intermediate, and advanced students to excel at school, professionally, and socially by overcoming any obstacles they encounter in learning English. I ensure that my students develop the confidence, self-esteem, and proficiency to do well in school tests or in a professional environment. By combining ESOL with coaching, I help students overcome fears and doubts they may have in expressing their full potential. At the same time I challenge them to explore their own interests, so they become personally engaged in the process of learning a new language. We create goals and timelines together which makes learning fun, at the same stimulating the student's inborn abilities and desire to learn and excel.
My policy is to tailor each class to the needs of the individual student. This individualized attention offers the best opportunity to learn and improve your English language skills at your own pace, however I also offer group classes if wanted. I offer periodic assessment and ask for feedback from my students. I will never bill the students or parents if not completely satisfied. I live in Rockland County and am willing to travel to your home or place of work.
I do offer make up classes if you are unable to attend a class, but I need a 24 hour notice of your cancellation to do this.
I look forward to hearing from you and learning about your personal learning needs or answer any questions you may have. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified as an ESOL teacher from the Literacy Assistance Center in New York City. I have also taught and lived in South America for several years and am very familiar with the various cultures and the many challenges facing immigrants coming to this country. My specialty is helping immigrants overcome any lack of confidence or fear while building a basic foundation of speaking, understanding, reading and writing English. I also help the students to understand this culture and how things are done in the United States. This is important
in order to help them to integrate into the American culture.
A review from one of my previous students:

I learned so much from Merrie Robin. Her classes supported me to speak even when I was afraid.
