About Katherine

My name is Katherine (or Katie), and I recently graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's of Science in Biological Sciences. My areas of focus were Genetics and Development, and Microbiology. I also took a variety of Psychology courses, and stayed very active in music during my undergraduate career.

After graduating from Cornell, I want to continue to spread my passion for biology by helping others understand the concepts and learn how awesome it really is. I have taken quite a few courses in my focuses (including Population Genetics, Food Microbiology, Bacterial Genetics, Mammalian Embryology, and Pathogenic Bacteriology) as well as the courses that were the base of my degree (such at General Biology, Evolution, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Statistics).

My interest in Psychology comes from my potential future career goal of becoming a Genetic Counselor. The courses I took included Intro to Psychology, Adult Psychopathology, Developmental Psychopathology, and Biological Issues in Human Development. With all my studies combined, one of my major areas of interest is human development on a biological and psychological level, from conception through adolescence. I am also interested in various microbiology topics, especially microbiome and its affect on the human body.

My experience with helping others comes from being an Orientation Leader and Supervisor for three years in a row, and Vice President of my campus's chamber music club. Through these activities, I was able to work hands on with other students with showing them the ropes and answering any questions they may have.

On top of my science background, I also have experience with music. I am mainly a flute player, in which I played in Cornell's Wind Symphony on piccolo for two years, and various chamber ensembles for all four of my college years (including taking a chamber music class for credit). I've also done a variety of pit orchestras, and am always looking to increase my musical experience on any reed instrument I can get my hands on.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Biological Sciences. My primary focuses were Microbiology and Genetics, but I took a variety of courses out of my core requirements and out of interests. Some of these courses include Introductory Biology, Evolution, Genetics, and General Parasitology. From my concentration requirements, I took other courses including Food Microbiology, Bacterial Genetics, Population Genetics, and Mammalian Embryology.

Flute

Until college, I participated in private lessons, getting high scores in New York State's solo competition in flute and piccolo (all within the 96-99/100 range), and won the spot for Jefferson-Lewis county's Senior Solo competition in 2009. Throughout college I stayed active musically by participating on flute and piccolo my first two years in Cornell's Wind Symphony, which held professional-level rehearsals twice a week preparing for a few concerts a semester. Also academically, I participated in a chamber flute class for credit, which was run by one of the flute instructors at the university. I also was Vice President of my campus's chamber music club, where I participated and managed multiple ensembles on flute, piccolo, voice, and saxophone for all four years, as well as assisting in creating and helping the other ensembles associated with the club.

Genetics

One of the focuses of my degree was genetics and developmental biology. I took an array of genetics courses (genetics, bacterial genomics, personalized genetics and the human microbiome, developmental biology, mammalian embryology, population genetics). Through one of my courses, I had hands on experience working with Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) through a two month long experiment, as well as various shorter microbial experiments. My labwork in classes and the lab I did research with for two years, I also have hands on experience with techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA extraction, and the use of various analysis programs (BLAST, Chromas, DnaSP, MEGA). I eventually am planning on getting a masters to become a genetic counselor, so this is an area within biology I am very passionate about (and I love to share this passion).

Microbiology

One of the focuses of my degree was Microbiology. I took an array of Microbiology courses (Food Microbiology, Pathogenic Bacteriology, General Parasitology, Personalized Genetics and the Human Microbiome), as well as worked two years in a microbiology research lab on my campus. My research worked hands on with soil bacteria that were involved in bio-degradation, so I have hands on experience with understanding culturing, identification, PCR/gel electrophoresis, gas chromatography, DNA sequencing, and DNA/RNA extractions.

Psychology

Even though I focused on Biology for my degree, I took a variety of Psychology courses including Intro to Psychology, Adult Psychopathology, Developmental Psychopathology, and Biological Issues in Human Development. On top of these courses, I participated in a semester of psychology-related research and participated in training for a counseling service on my campus. The research I participated in was focused on sleep maintenance, and included understanding other psychology research on sleep. The counseling service I trained for went hands-on into a variety of different psychological models, as well as brought guest speakers in to talk about specific issues, such as eating disorders, depression, and suicide.
