Hello, my name is Virginia and I am an adjunct English professor and Ph.D. candidate at St. John's University. Aside from teaching university courses I also work as a teacher for the Institute of Reading Development. I have had the opportunity to travel and teach in over 13 states, working with all ages. I specialize in reading and writing skills but also can help with foreign language, history, test prep etc.
I am passionate about reading and an enthusiastic motivator. I have taught hundreds of students of all ages (pre-k to adult courses) to achieve fluency in reading and writing English, improving my students' reading speed and comprehension skills. My personal policy for working with children and teens is to work with them warmly, but also directly to really address problem areas. I want to set students up with study skills and help build motivation and enthusiasm so learning can be an enjoyable experience in a relaxed atmosphere instead of an anxious battle.
I tutor students of all ages- from kindergarteners first learning to read to adult students struggling with college writing. If there is any other information you would like to know do not hesitate to email me! Hello, my name is Virginia and I am an adjunct English professor and Ph.D. candidate at St. John's University. Virginia has been working with my 12 year old son and I couldn't be happier with the progress they are making. His grades have improved but, even more importantly, his whole attitude towards reading has improved! He seems to be a more confident reader and this has begun spilling over to his other subjects as well. She is very flexible, patient, kind and even fun! I am so happy that we chose Virginia. I would recommend her to anyone!
Miss Ginny is a wonderful tutor who uses fun approaches to keep my 6 year old son's attention. He truly enjoys working with her and she is a wonderful influence on him. Recently, she suggested having him read on his own and write down any words that he wasn't completely sure about. Well, this weekend he took 3 books into his room with a sheet of paper and a pen. He emerged about an hour later and could tell me the main idea of each of the stories. His sheet of paper had words like meanwhile, different and airplane. Before my son started working with Miss Ginny he did not have the confidence to branch out and try to read independently on his own. She is an excellent tutor and I am sooooooooooo happy we were lucky enough to find her.
Virginia and my son really hit it off! Virginia was funny, and really knows this topic. She gave him substantive pointers and it was a great lesson. My son is looking forward to his next lesson!! We enjoyed meeting her as well.
We had 5 lessons with Virginia so far and find her to be an excellent teacher. Tutoring sessions are dynamic, Virginia never finishes her class based on time and she always will finish the topic, even if the session will need to run a bit longer. She is great at prioritizing child weaknesses and helping with the most needed first. My son really likes working with her, because she is friendly, kind but fair at the same time. His readiness results improved right after the second class already. We will continue our language exploration with this great tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
