Bio

Following a successful career in editing, publishing, and writing, I am currently a teaching assistant for children with autism at the Jesse J. Kaplan School in Rockland County. I have had extensive daily classroom experience, primarily with 12 to 15-year-olds on the spectrum (all levels). I look forward to a personal interview and in-depth discussion (with parents or guardians) of each student's needs and abilities before taking on a tutorial engagement.

I graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in English from Amherst College, where I was awarded The Armstrong Prize and The Corbin Prize in English (for essay writing) and received an Honorable Mention from the Academy of American Poets. While at Amherst, I was editor of the literary magazine and author of a novel as my senior honors thesis. Post-graduation, I attended the Radcliffe Publishing Procedures Course at Harvard Summer School before embarking on a very successful career in writing, editing, and publishing. I served as editor in chief for Banbury Books (an imprint of Dell Publishing Company), senior managing editor at Rodale Books, and executive editor at Prentice Hall Press. Throughout my career, I have taught and mentored young writers, as well as writing and editing books for the young-adult market. I researched and coauthored books with a number of mental-health experts, including one by psychologist Dr. Dan Gottlieb, which is an award-winning book about growing up with autism that has been translated into more than fifteen languages.

The Jesse J. Kaplan school, where I am currently employed as a full-time teaching assistant, is recognized as one of the foremost public schools for children with autism. I have more than 300 hours of teaching experience using the Discrete Trial Training (DTT) protocol for one-to-one instruction. (Though my full-time teaching experience has been primarily with mid-grade students, I have also done substitute teaching at all other levels, ranging from 5-year-olds through 20-year-olds.) Jesse J.
