About Sophia

After spending the summer of 2013 living and working on Italy's beautiful Lake Como at The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, I wanted to continue and grow my passion for the Italian language and became certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) to tutor at my university. I remained a tutor for two years with the Office of Academic Support, responsible for many duties including:

-Show concern for tutees’ academic progress by utilizing academic knowledge, interpersonal skills (careful listening, patience and openness) and tutoring techniques (preparation, encouraging dialog, learning strategies and techniques).
-Plan tutoring sessions in advance and/or be prepared with material to review during each meeting so that tutee gains as much as possible from each session
-Conduct oneself in a professional manner while performing duties.
-Keep tutoring records up to date and accurate. Complete all required forms on a regular and timely basis

I love tutoring Italian because I believe that to know another language opens one up to a whole new world of being in which they can connect with others on a level they never would have been able to get to before. I believe that my experiences living, working and traveling all over Italy the past 3 years have been enhanced by my knowledge of Italian and I hope to facilitate those same experiences for others. There is just nothing like watching someone grow to understand the language and seeing them succeed.

Having picked up the Italian language in just under a year and becoming fluent through cultural immersion, developing relationships with my Italian coworkers and friends while abroad, as well as continuing my studies after receiving my Bachelors Degree and Italian Language Minor, my tutoring approach is very interactive. I like to have fun while using a variety of resources including hands-on/online games, free language apps, my favorite Italian textbook (the same textbook my Italian professor taught me with), flashcards and whiteboard activities - all of which have been effective for my 30+ students through the years. It is also important to know and assess my students' learning styles and what their best learning practices are.

I would love to be your next Italian tutor with a young, vibrant approach and I am very flexible when it comes to arranging appointments. I look forward to meeting you! A presto!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Italian

I have been certified by the College Learning and Reading Association (CLRA) to tutor Italian language for 2+ years; however, I can tutor just about any level of Italian based on the student. Having lived and worked in the hotel industry on Lake Como, Italy for a total of 5 months, I have a breadth of knowledge on the language both formally and with slang/dialect.
