About Tapi

Any educational problem can be fixed, no matter how hard it seems.

There is hope.

Above the level of hope is competence.

I am referring here to the competence of a skilled tutor who has taken on hundreds of students over a fourteen-year period and turned each one of them into high-performing scholars.

When you have the knowledge, certainty and willingness to accept challenging students and get results 100% of the time, hope is no longer just a byword. It's reality.

I taught Math in five states and I have been providing tutoring for over fourteen years in the areas of Study Skills and Math.

I have found that there are very specific reasons why a student would have trouble studying. Knowing these and how to remedy them opens the door to real learning. I consider it vital for all my students to be able to study independently after the tutoring. This is an area that is generally neglected by modern education.

I have also found that continued student success depends heavily on parental involvement at the lower levels, while at the upper levels older students respond best when given motivation and study skills that enable them to learn without stress.

With the advent of the ubiquitous internet, students can now access knowledge at the touch of a button. Education in the twenty-first century must equip them with the ability to sift through tons of information and extract usable facts that can lead to successful innovations. Rote learning has to assume a subordinate role to extrapolation as critical reasoning skills are amplified. My tutoring approach seeks to increase interest and curiosity while continuously challenging the students to think for themselves. This results in increased ability to assimilate, evaluate and even create knowledge. Most importantly, the students learn how to excel in any academic environment and they easily master new and unfamiliar topics.
As a final note, it is necessary that I specify the single category of students beyond my reach: those who are under medical treatment for 'learning disorders' or other conditions. The reason is that drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta, Celexa, Xanax and Adderall reduce the ability to handle the abstract concepts of mathematics.
Any educational problem can be fixed, no matter how hard it seems.

I must admit that seeking to complete an entire semester of college calculus in two and half weeks was very adventurous, especially after your long hiatus from math in general, but your diligence paid off and you did exceedingly well in the course.
My only regret is that many of your classmates did not have access to my help; I'm sure their grades could have been salvaged too.

Renee, I am very pleased that you got a well-deserved 'A' in this class! Your hard work and perseverance certainly paid off. Near the end, there was a clearly noticeable difference in skill and confidence compared to when we started a few short months ago. I am glad I was able to be your guide on the final stretch to college graduation. Congratulations!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I specialize in tutoring students for the Algebra 1 Regents exam, which includes basic concepts, word problems and calculator functions. I teach my students simple techniques for solving complex problems; the good results show that this is a successful approach.

Calculus

Calculus deals with constant change in situations such as motion, growth and decay.
I have helped many students truly appreciate the value of calculus in real life so they can become motivated to tackle the material and succeed on tough courses.
The classes I cover include high school calculus all the way up to college calculus 2.

Chess

Chess helps students develop patience, planning skills, tenacity and strategy. It is also referred to as 'The World's Greatest Game' for good reason. A chess virtuoso like Chicago's own Bobby Fischer (World Champion 1972-1975) combines flawless technique with spectacular art to paint out a beautiful canvas that is best savored by those who know the rules of the game.
As the Champion of the Boston March Open Tournament (2009), I am held in high regard by players in Massachusetts. My ability to teach makes me best positioned to help beginners and experienced players alike with chess skills.
As a U.S National Master I am keen to help many students learn this game from novice level all the way up to the professional league.

Geometry

Geometry demands knowledge and application of many theorems, axioms and postulates. I have helped many students master the basics and learn how to apply the principles of geometry. I mostly tutor for the Geometry Regents as I find that honors or proof-based classes are heavily dependent on variable teacher preferences.

ISEE

The ISEE offers many students an opportunity to write their own future by getting into their school of choice. ISEE stands for Independent School Entrance Examination. It is offered by ERB, the Educational Records Bureau.
The ISEE exam covers Verbal (vocabulary), Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning (ability to think with and use Math in unique situations) and finally it covers Mathematics.
The test has different levels for different grades: Lower, Middle and Upper.
After tutoring many students in the ISEE I have found that the best preparation starts with a solid education in Basics. A reading program that emphases depth and breadth of extensive reading on a daily basis would be the ideal prep. The singular difference between students on the ISEE is simply vocabulary, knowledge of.
As for the test itself, I have found that students need 6-12 weeks to prepare for the ISEE proper. Utilizing texts from various test-prep publishers as well as the ERB website itself, I have been able to quickly teach test-taking skills as well as subject content to excellent results.

Precalculus

Pre-Calculus covers many topics that range from vectors to limits. I have found that students benefit the most from pre-calc classes when they comprehend the underlying concepts of each topic. This can get lost in honors pre-calc classes due to the speed required. Even then, I can help illuminate the basics and applications of each concept.

Study Skills

I studied Educational Methodology as part of a brand-new system developed and tested on several continents across a wide spectrum of students from different backgrounds and of different ages.
The common outcome of this program is that students have a renewed interest in subjects that were previously 'boring' or 'difficult' or 'useless' to them. They begin to learn and study independently. They score way above average on all types of tests. They experience a gain of several reading levels.
They begin to modify their own behaviour while acquiring a repertoire of new skills and new habits that will last them a lifetime.
In short, study and learning becomes easy, even joyful.
I have seen numerous results with these techniques over 14 years and I'm always amazed at the consistency of results.

Trigonometry

The Algebra 2/Trigonometry Regents exam covers advanced algebra plus triangle and angle relationships.
I help students avoid rote memorization so that they can be able to answer all types of trig questions by using only seven key items. Students routinely go up two letter grades once they master my simplified algebra techniques.
