Hello, I'm Jamie, and welcome to my profile! You may have landed here because you or a family member may be struggling with learning English as a Second Language. Or perhaps you are a native English speaker finding reading and/or writing a challenge. Well, I’m here to help! As for me, my primary education was gained through homeschooling, private schooling, and public schooling, finally graduating in 1999. So I have experience in many different learning environments as a young student. In 2002, I graduated from college at SUNY Morrisville in Morrisville, NY, which is a state university. I studied in the Office Technology program with a focus on effective communication and writing skills, as well as the productive use of Microsoft Office Suite in the business environment. For this, I received a Certificate in Word Processing.

On August 8th, 2019, I completed a 150 hour master course with a grade of 'A' in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (or TEFL, also known as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, or TESOL). I'm really excited to receive my ESL teaching certificate from learnTEFL, and they've given me a lot of great skills and resources to help students of all ages learn or improve in English! For tutoring in the English language, I will be using the Communicative Language Teaching method. This involves learning what you already know, and then helping you build on that through presenting new skills and having you practice with activities like games, role plays, singing, and even "freetalk", where you get to practice talking in English about what is important to you. I will work with you to help you sound more like a native so that misunderstandings are reduced. You will be getting lots of practice speaking English and learning to write, spell and read, as well as increasing your vocabulary—all with the goal to help you communicate fluently with others. Also, I currently have over 20 years of experience in Public Speaking in a volunteer capacity and assisting others to do the same through mentoring and private instruction. I can help you find your motivation to speak and be a private, supportive audience as you practice your assignments, all while offering encouraging feedback. To help students with reading and writing, I will also be that audience offering feedback and useful suggestions for your personal assignments. I love to learn and I continue to take courses myself (currently I'm learning Spanish), so I am always a student as well as a tutor.

Tutoring is all about you as the student, and you are what I will focus on during our sessions. I will expect you to do your best as we work together so you can benefit the most from our partnership, and I will do the same. Unless there is a very serious emergency, illness, or severe weather conditions, I expect us both to attend our scheduled appointments. Any suggestions and insights are welcome from students and parents. If you would like more details about me and my methods, my policies for learning and cancellations, and to have a consultation, contact me! If I'm not available to answer a message right away, be assured I will get back to you as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours. I definitely want to hear from you, because I don't want someone to miss out on improving their education!

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have just received my certification for teaching ESL and passed the master course with a grade of "A". I am excellent with the English language, being a fluent native speaker and avid reader. I am currently learning Spanish to help me better understand the general challenges my students will face in learning another language themselves.
Grammar,

Grammar

I took Office Technology courses for my Word Processing Certificate and interned for several weeks in the dean's office. Training to work in an office and handle business communications means your grammar should be spot on! I am also an avid reader of nonfiction, and grammar mistakes stick out like a sore thumb to me. While I may not know everything there is to know about it yet, I do know what is needed to be an effective writer and proofreader.
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a student in the Office Technology program, I learned the importance of being a good proofreader. Being accurate in your writing is important in making first impressions, whether you are applying for a job or writing a how-to book. I was able to practice proofreading my own documents as well as some of the dean's communications during my internship.

Reading

In grade school I was always far ahead of my peers in the ability to read. I tutored one adult for a year and helped her to practice and improve her reading skills. Reading was important in my Office Technology classes in college since we were learning to effectively communicate in a business setting. I am an avid reader of nonfiction books and never allow an unfamiliar word to stop me from understanding the subject at hand.
