About Mark

If you are looking for someone who not only knows math, but teaches and explains using everyday language and examples, then please consider contacting me.

I hold New York State permanent certification (K-12 math) and the more rigorous National certification (Adolescent and Young Adulthood Math).

I've been teaching high school math in Westchester County - all levels - for the past 17 years. My specialties are courses I've taught the most, namely Geometry, Algebra II/Trig, and Precalculus. Currently, I teach Honors-level Precalculus, but I have taught EVERY couse leading up to Precalculus (and Calculus AB) at one time or another, and have tutored EVERY high school course for many years as well.

I have elementary and middle school aged children, so if the "new math" they are bringing home baffles you, I can demystify that too!

I teach in White Plains and live on the Danbury/Brewster border, so generally I took to tutor weekday afternoons anywhere along the I-684 corridor as I head north from White Plains at the end of the school day.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've taught Algebra and Alg II/Trig at the Honors and Regents levels for the past 12 years at a High School - and tutored privately for just about as long. In addition to my NY teaching certification, I am also National Board certified in Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics for grades 7-12.

Algebra 2

I've taught Alg II/Trig at the Honors and Regents levels for the past 12 years at a High School - and tutored privately for just about as long. In addition to my NY teaching certification, I am also National Board certified in Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics for grades 7-12.

Discrete Math

I taught Discrete Math at White Plains High School for 3 years 2007-2010. In 2011, we changed the curriculum slightly and renamed the course "Contemporary Math"...which I continue to teach today.

While it was called Discrete Math, we covered VOTING METHODS (ex. Hamilton Method), Euler Segments, and Traveling Salesman Problems among other more traditional Discrete topics.

Geometry

I've taught Geometry at the Regents level for 15 years at White Plains High School - and tutored privately for even longer.

I take particular pride in making the concepts less abstract and more practical (and fun!) by using actual situations around my home where knowledge of Geometry has helped me complete a task...from cutting down a tree too near our house, to the construction of our annual hockey rink in our front yard.

Prealgebra

Having taught Algebra (NYS regents curriculum) for many years puts me in a strong position to anticipate and guide your child through whatever challenges they have in PreAlgebra.

Does the Common Core baffle you? For better or worse it is here. I spend a considerable amount of my professional day working with my teaching colleagues to develop meaningful modules that address the Common Core standards.

In addition to my NY teaching certification, I am also National Board certified in Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics for grades 7-12.

Precalculus

I teach the Honors level Precalculus course at White Plains High School. In prior years, I've taught The Honors level Algebra II/Trig and Calc AB courses.

I hold permanent teaching certification in NY State for K-12 mathematics.

SAT Math

I've been tutoring SAT math for the past 15 years, both SAT I and SAT II and can provide you with several references from clients who saw significant gains in their math scores. In addition, I've taught Alg II/Trig at the Honors and Regents levels for the past 12 years at White Plains High School - and tutored privately for just about as long. In addition to my NY teaching certification, I am also National Board certified in Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics for grades 7-12.

Trigonometry

I've been teaching Honors Trigonometry (as part of the NYS Alg II/Trig regents curriculum) for the past 14 years at White Plains High School and tutoring the course for just as long.

In addition to my NY teaching certification, I am also National Board certified in Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics for grades 7-12.
