About Richetta

I have taught Middle School Science in New York City Public Schools for 20 years. I have a New York State license in science education, an elementary school license and a School Building Leader license. Along with my regular education science classes, I have taught autistic children and ESL classes and bilingual science classes. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a Biology Minor, a Master's Degree in Science Education and a Post-Master's Certificate in Educational Leadership.

In my spare time, I enjoy attending church services, singing, making beaded jewelry, riding my bike and walking as a form exercise. Finally, I believe it is important to be genuine with our children and encourage them to do their best. We must let them know, no matter what obstacles they face, they can succeed.

My hope is that I can be an educator that children remember as they get older (one who made a positive difference in their life). I let my students know I am not perfect, but I will push myself to help them educationally. I will always be fair, and I will be a good listener when they need an ear to listen.

Science is my absolute love. I am able to assist students in biology, nutrition, ecology, and geology/earth science. Because I have taught middle school science (grades 6th through 8th - biology, physics and earth science) for many years, this is my specialty. However, my knowledge allows me the ability to help elementary school students, as well as, high school students.

When we talk, I would like to find out your child's exact educational needs and what you want your child to accomplish. During my first meeting with the student, I will administer a learning style preliminary test, and then also, a pre-test in the subject area to find out the child's best style of learning, and their science level. From there, I will work on specific content goals each day to boost scientific vocabulary, comprehension and knowledge. We will also work on science inquiry labs/assignments and understanding scientific method. This will allow the student to learn from hands-on scientific activities, making inferences, ideas and assessments, since this is a great part of science and the common core curriculum. Periodically, assessments will be given to see what has been retained and what educational aspect we still need to work on. Study assignments will be given for further review and later discussion at our next meeting.

If you need to contact me, please do so through this website. I take appointments to schedule time at your home and I do request the parent to also be home during the tutoring session. If you have any questions, I will gladly be available to answer them.

Lastly, children/students are our brightest future. They need lots of love, motivation and encouragement to know they can achieve anything they put their minds to. I want them to love learning, and learning new information about the world around us, whether it be in history, science, reading, languages, or mathematics. As an educator, I will continue to help children, and help them succeed to reach high goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
