About Rachel

I have an M.A.T. from George Washington University's Museum Education Program, where I gained experience working with learners of all abilities. As an undergraduate at Columbia University I worked as a Writing Fellow, and tutored students in writing of all genres from across all disciplines. At the same time, I tutored reading and math at several elementary schools in Harlem. I also have experience teaching ESL, Hebrew, and French. As someone with a natural affinity for the arts, I know for myself what it's like to need clear and sometimes creative instruction in math, which is why my methods are flexible, fun, and get results.

I have worked all of my professional life in education and public radio-- fields that require knowledge of how best to communicate with diverse audiences. No matter how comfortable I am in the classroom teaching biology, algebra or French, one-on-one tutoring will always be my preference.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Grades K-6 are the years when so much important learning happens, and intellectual habits start to form. I've worked with K-6th graders for fifteen years; I've taught nature camp, science lessons, tutored privately in math, reading, and foreign languages (French and Hebrew), designed and implemented religious school curricula, and helped get students back on track by assessing their individual learning styles. My methods are fun and effective, and give students the confidence they need to succeed.

I have an M.A.T. in Museum Education from George Washington University, and a bachelor's from Columbia University, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Psychology. It will be my pleasure to work with your elementary schooler!

Elementary Math

Too many kids are turned off by math at an early age. I've worked with numerous students to not only get their grades up, but to restore the confidence they need to succeed in math class. Using a combination of real-world examples and school-driven lessons, I've helped unsure students grasp complex homework concepts...and even start to enjoy working with numbers.

French

I took French throughout elementary, middle and high schools, and completed the French curriculum at Barnard College, Columbia University. I worked on a farm in central France, and spent several months traveling and working throughout the country.

Reading

I have tutored elementary schoolers from all backgrounds in reading skills and comprehension. I have experience working with students who read far behind their grade level, and kids who would rather play video games. It is always a joy to help them realize how fun reading can be!

Great tutor!

She makes the material understandable, and easier to remember and learn. I feel so much better in class because of Rachel's instruction and teaching style.
