I love helping people learn more than anything else. There's nothing more empowering than gaining a new skill or understanding, nothing more energizing than helping someone reach that point. I've been lucky to have had teachers who have shared this passion, demonstrating the patience, grace, enthusiasm, and unwavering belief in learners that make these moments possible. I learned from them by example as well as formally, taking an undergraduate course about effective tutoring, "Teaching and Tutoring Writing Across the Disciplines," which was a core class for many peer educators at my school. This class informed all of my work in education, and I had the privilege to help lead it years later as a college employee. My approach is learner-centered, allowing the student's needs and interests to shape the session. My learners gain an understanding of what we've done together and what their next steps are.
The bulk of my tutoring experience is in communication. As an undergraduate, I worked at my college's Writing and Speaking Centers, helping students at any stage of the process–from brainstorming to finishing touches. I offered one-on-one assistance as well as group sessions on writing and public speaking. Upon graduating, I worked as the Writing Associates Program Fellow, supervising the centers and helping to train new associates. I find that many of the lessons we teach our Writing and Speaking Associates are applicable across fields–prioritizing higher-order concerns, thinking critically about how to communicate an idea from speaker to audience, considering generic conventions–and I took these lessons into my work as a music instructor, philosophy educator, music history teaching assistant, and childcare provider.
I am excited to help all students, wherever they are in the learning process. This brief bio cannot contain the totality of my enthusiasm and experience, so don't hesitate to get in touch! I'm quick to respond, and I look forward to meeting you.
