Hello, my name is Rio. I'm a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina with a degree in mathematics, and I have moved up to NYC to begin my graduate studies in math this fall at CCNY. Hello, my name is Rio. I'm a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina with a degree in mathematics, and I have moved up to NYC to begin my graduate studies in math this fall at CCNY. On the side I am rowing with NYAC, having rowed collegiately for four years. I've been tutoring for well over six years now, since I was in high school, mostly in mathematics with people from many different backgrounds and ages. I've worked with students who absolutely despised mathematics and have achieved with them what I would say is at least a better working relation with the subject. At the same time I've taught competition math (Mathcounts, AMC prep, etc.) to students with a passion for numbers, so I've seen a good range. Additionally, I worked for several years in the UNC math help center, with all kinds of homework specific problems. In short I feel very comfortable and confident both teaching theory and entire subjects and breaking down mental barriers and/a fear of math or simply assisting with difficult homework problems for those who are already mostly mathematically comfortable.

Additionally I feel I am uniquely disposed to assist students with math difficulties because I personally when I was young had great troubles and fear of mathematics, but through some very kind tutoring I was able to surmount them and now I am going to math grad school. I'd be very glad to pass this experience on and assist students with any kind of mathematical or academic hurdles they might have.

As the above indicates one of my big strengths is that I can really understand appreciate students' difficulties and am very experienced working past them. Beyond that I am an effective teacher because my own learning style is thorough and deep, thus when I understand a subject I do so very well and can explain its intricacies skillfully to other people.

In more particular detail my undergraduate (and now graduate) education, mostly in math, has given me sufficient knowledge to tutor in most any mathematical subject desired from pre-algebra all the way to complex analysis and group theory. And although my speciality is undoubtable mathematics I have always had a passion for the humanities and have consistently performed well in my electives in history, english and writing and would be glad to assist in those areas as well.

Thanks very much for taking the time to get to know me a bit, if you have any more questions I'd be glad to provide some answers and even more so to discuss potential tutoring options. It would be my honor to show you the marvelous world of math (or just help you pass that test, hey, I'm a realist).

Discrete Math

Through my acquisition of an undergraduate degree in mathematics and my courses in computer science I have taken and excelled in several courses directly about discrete math as well as others which use its methods. This continues in my graduate coursework as well. I have also tutored this subject extensively through my time working at my university's math help center.
