About Misha

Bio

I have been a tutor of mathematics and programming / computer science for about 15 years now.

I recognize that each person learns differently, so I believe in a fluid and adaptable way of teaching, rather than a rigid "one fits all" approach. Over the years, I have come across many learning styles, and as a result, I have developed a versatile style of teaching that responds to the student's needs.

My teaching experience began as a graduate student at MIT. I was a teaching assistant for a Probability class for three semesters. I led weekly recitations of roughly 30 undergraduates, as well as smaller sized tutorials. In addition, I gave final exam review sessions to the entire class of 300+ undergraduates.

After graduating, I began tutoring students one on one in my spare time, in math and programming. In mathematics, I have tutored everything from elementary mathematics, Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, to Pre-calculus, Calculus, Probability, Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra. I have also helped students prepare for standardized exams such as SAT and SHSAT. I teach students general problem solving techniques which enable them to generate new ideas and solve more problems on their own.

As for programming and computer science, I specialize in teaching people the craft of good software design and "how to think like a programmer". While we may use whichever programming language you're familiar with or are looking to learn, my lessons will have a strong emphasis on the core underlying concepts, which are common to many languages. Programming languages that I have helped students with include C++, Python, Java, Scheme, C, Netlogo, JavaScript.

In addition to learning programming, we will cover useful data structures (hash tables, linked lists etc) and algorithms that should be part of any serious programmer's arsenal.

I have worked with students of all ages, from as young as 11 years old to people in their 60s. I have worked with children in junior high, high school students, college students and professionals.

Over the past decade, I have written software systems at two successful quantitative hedge funds and a highly successful global technology firm. I have also spent several years as a quantitative trader at one of the largest and most successful hedge funds in New York City.

I am available in the evenings after 6:30 , for in-person lessons or Skype. I would be happy to answer any questions over the phone.

I hold a master's degree in Computer Science from MIT. As far as industry experience with C++, I have spent 6.5 years as a senior software engineer at Bloomberg writing C++ backend systems for the "Bloomberg Terminal" software product. I have been teaching many students how to program in C++ for about 5 years. I focus on teaching design principles and how to think like a software engineer. I am also an experienced C tutor. As part of an in-depth tutoring lesson plan, I will teach you the fundamentals of object oriented design in C++, how to use the STL library for standard containers and algorithms, and even more advanced concepts like multithreaded / asynchronous programming.
