Hi, my name is Alana. I am a dual degree graduate from Johns Hopkins University with degrees earned in Cognitive Neuroscience/computer science and Psychology and a minor in photography. I graduated as member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society as well as with university and departmental honors. I have 8 years of tutoring experience in subjects ranging from elementary math to university level neuroscience to writing to study skills and everything in between. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant in upper level psychology, brain science and photography classes while at Johns Hopkins. I spent three years researching memory and learning about the best ways to help students learn, which helps me best target my tutoring towards YOU!
I love tutoring. I love working with students ranging from elementary school age to adults! I have a strong belief that with the right skill set and approach, anybody can learn anything they’d like, and I’d like to help you do that. My specialties are especially in study skills, writing/grammar, psychology and science, but I am very versatile and able/willing to help you in whichever area you need it. I am personable and patient, and I will work with you until we find a system that “clicks” for you. Most importantly, I want to make sure YOU are comfortable and help you learn and have fun.
I have a Psychology degree from Johns Hopkins University, have researched in the Psychology field for over three years, have taken graduate course work, and have taught multiple psychology classes. I love learning about the mind and psychology, and I love teaching about the mind and psychology.
As a performer of over 18 years, I have learned what skills are needed to get up in front of people and connect with them, and I want to teach you to do the same! Public speaking doesn't have to be as daunting a task as it appears! Before you know it, you'll LOVE speaking in front of others! When it comes to writing and grammar, I have experience in writing for literary essays, creative writing, scientific writing and historical writing. I have years of editing experience, so I am always able and willing to help you find/learn from grammar errors, and I am more than happy to help you make stylistic changes to improve the overall structure/readability of your work.
As a multiple degree holder, I have learned what study skills work for me. However, that does not mean that those same skills will work for you. My degrees in the mind/brain and research of memory/learning are what I can use to help you approach ANY subject and find a system that works for you! Further, as a teaching assistant and tutor, I have learned different tips and tricks to help you most easily/quickly master your material.
Absolutely do not hesitate to reach out to me! I love learning, and I love helping others do the same. I understand how it feels to be confused or behind, but you are not stuck there! We can work together and get you exactly where you want to be :)
Very Knowledgeable Tutor
Alana has helped me study cognitive science. This is my first semester taking a class on this subject and she has been a tremendous help. She is extremely knowledgeable in the subject and simplifies many complex topics so I can better understand them. So far I'm doing very well in class and have a great understanding of the material. She also has a flexible schedule so if I have a busy week, we always are able to find time to work. I would recommend her to everyone.Sumeer , 21 lessons with Alana
Amazing Tutor! Helped me a ton!
Excellent explanations of concepts in Neurobiology, review questions and more. Explained things that previously made no sense until they felt trivial! Great tutor, cannot recommend enough!Shafi, 13 lessons with Alana
Alana really help me during my job hunt. I had so many barriers to applying and we worked together to get rid of them. She helped with cover letters and interview- both of which was very helpful. I had a good experience and recommend Alana to others for career development.Prathima, 8 lessons with Alana
Knowledgeable, patient, professional and focused on results!
Alana has been awesome. We came to her after my son performed poorly on two college level psychology tests. She was able to assess his abilities and develop a plan forward after just one session. With only a week to prepare for a third and critical test, she got my son up to speed fast by simplifying complex concepts and providing excellent study tips. She was also very easy to work with and my son had nothing but positive things to say about her approach. We were ecstatic when he received a B on the test!!!Tracey, 25 lessons with Alana
Knowledgable and down to business
I am in a masters program in psychology and I needed help with a research proposal. I had asked my instructor, but there was still something I was missing. Alana cleared it all up for me and added better understanding of research on top of my original issue as well. I learned more in our hour together than I had so far in this class. She gets right down to business and is conscious of the students time while still giving a thorough explanation and needed help. I am looking forward to working with her again on the next part of the proposal.Judy, 6 lessons with Alana
