About Jake

I am a Princeton (bachelor’s) and MIT (master’s) graduate specializing in tutoring for standardized tests (SAT, GRE, and LSAT) and high school courses in math and history, including AP courses. I have extensive experience tutoring math for middle and high school students. I’m currently a student at Columbia Law School. I scored in the top 1% on the SAT, GRE, and LSAT despite scoring very low on my diagnostic tests, so I have personal experience in making enormous improvement on standardized tests. I take a very honest, efficient, and individualized approach to tutoring. I will not waste time on anything that I believe the student ought to do individually. I hope to serve not only as an academic resource but also a real-life example that mastery of the material and success in admissions could be attained through hard work.

I offer admissions consulting for high school and college students. I graduated valedictorian of my class from the Albany Academy. I was a National AP Scholar. In high school I was student council president, played saxophone in the band, ran cross country and track, and served as president of my local Ronald McDonald House Teen Board. I was admitted to Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Cornell, Pomona, Berkeley, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Wash U, and Vanderbilt for undergrad. I was offered the Jefferson Scholarship, a merit-based full scholarship to the University of Virginia. I was admitted to master’s programs at Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Yale, Columbia, and Penn. For law school, I was admitted to Columbia, Penn, NYU, Duke, and Wash U with a full scholarship.

I am a native speaker of mandarin, so I can help both students who would like to learn Chinese and ESL students who would like to improve their English. In high school I won numerous essay contests, including one at the national level. I have published papers in peer reviewed journals. Hence I can help with editing papers and college essays.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
