Hello
I am a graduate in English Literature and have a Post Graduate Diploma in English Studies as well. Over 23 years I have taught test prep to undergraduates, graduates, those still in school, software professionals, doctors, engineers, and those working in business. I am here because I did my job.
The makers of standardized tests are clear in their minds about what and how they are going to test. We need to be clear about it too.
There are consistent and underlying patterns in standardized tests, such as the GRE, GMAT and SAT, just as there are underlying patterns in our thinking of which we are not aware. These are the test principles of standardized tests. They are common to all standardized tests though not every principle is tested in every test or with the same degree of complexity.
Every test principle is a rigorous thought pattern akin to a an unbreakable rule. Every such thought pattern has corresponding patterns which appear to be variations of it but which are contrary to it and mutually exclusive from it . They do not conform to the test principle.
When a student recognizes the test principle and the thought process that is evaluated, he is fully able to discern what is different from it and will consider this difference as a trap. Inability to discern the differences between a principle and what is mutually exclusive with it is because of lack of knowledge and application. it is judged to be a failure of reasoning.
The inexhaustible resources of language and subject matter help test makers camouflage the test principles. This fact makes it possible to test the same principle repeatedly. And this is what the test makers do. Although several versions of a test are administered on any test date, the scoring of all these versions are very strongly correlated even though they don't use the same questions.
Therefore a student needs comprehensive and thorough knowledge of these testing principles and this is also when we need to look at what we can actually do with that knowledge.
We need to put what we know into practice searching intently to find the underlying test principle/s of a question. We need to recognize them and that which is mutually exclusive from them. We need to think like the test makers think. And we more often than not do not come equipped to do it.
My job is to nurture the dormant abilities of the students and enable them to acquire the mindset required to take the standardized test successfully. This is what I did during my career.
It was in 1993 that I began to teach GRE (Verbal Section) and TOEFL in a small test prep company. After a year I found employment in another test prep company where I worked for 14 years. During this time I began to instruct students for other standardized tests including GMAT (Verbal and AWA), SAT (Reading, Writing and Language sections). I taught various versions of the tests as their formats changed over the years.
During this time the company grew from having an enrollment of 250 students (1994) to one having 7000 students (2007) per year. I derived tremendous satisfaction in instructing test takers how to take the GRE, GMAT, SAT, TOEFL and IELTS with confidence. Their success was my success. Many of them applied successfully to accredited universities and colleges in the US and other parts of the world.
If there is anything I learnt during these many years of teaching is that no one should take standardized tests for granted. There were a few gold medalists among my students, those who had ranked first in their departments. They were sure that GRE was going to be a cake walk, while others lived in dread of taking the test. For both kinds of students I would conduct a diagnostic test, so they could understand that there is a lot that a beginner does not know. Then I built their confidence. I empowered them with strategies and made clear why the right answers were correct and the wrong answers incorrect. I taught them how to reason out the answers and prepared them to take the tests because I wanted every student to realize his/her full potential.
I have not limited myself to GRE, GMAT or SAT. Now I also teach ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, (both English and Math), and AP English Language and Composition.
All my life I have sought to better the lives of others. Teaching, you see, is a daily sacrifice.
In addition to teaching I have interviewed, hired and trained candidates for positions of test prep faculty. I gave orientation to teaching staff in various branches of the company for which I was worked. I generated questions for the tests and brought out CDs of GRE and TOEFL in the computer adaptive format. I was head of the research department for four years. All these I mention to encourage you to gain the confidence that you can achieve a high score on GRE, GMAT and SAT working with me. Together we will tap the untapped resources of your mind so you can succeed in the tests, and in life as well. However, be prepared to do some rigorous thinking. At the end of it all you will love standardized tests. I can assure you of that.
