I'm a full-time student at Columbia University. I am a fluent, native English speaker and tutor math, physics, chemistry, and writing (see details below). A little about me: I'm from Bloomington, Indiana, a small college town where I attended high school. I graduated in three years with a 4.0, while taking nearly 30 credits of math and physics classes at Indiana University (GPA: 3.9). I took the SAT only once in my sophomore year, scoring a 2330, and the SAT II Math and Chemistry tests at the same time, scoring 800 on both. I have a perfect score on the PSAT/NMSQT (1520/1520), won the National AP Scholar Award, and won six state medals in Science Olympiad. I now study Mathematics here in NYC, and in my free time play on Columbia University's Men's Ultimate Frisbee team and enjoy reading novels, programming, playing chess and various video games, and exploring New York City.
While in high school, I led both my school's Science Olympiad team and its FIRST Robotics team, and came to appreciate the value of mentorship and individual instruction through my experience as a rising student in these organizations learning from my upperclassmen. As a senior, I led five hours a week of lectures on science and mathematics and worked individually with underclassmen to prepare them for competition on a variety of subjects. I also founded and acted as the president of a chess program where I collaborated with my classmates to teach a total of nearly 70 young students at a local elementary school chess and provide a rewarding and stimulating intellectual outlet. I've developed my mentorship skills over the years through these experiences, and love teaching and interacting with students of all ages.
Pedagogically, I value efficient learning strategies, habits of thought, and the concept of "The Beginner's Mind" in my own life and when I myself approach challenges, and therefore seek to emphasize these concepts in my teaching. Volumes of research show that when students view learning as a continuous process of questioning rather than a simple test of intelligence, they perform markedly better. Therefore, one of my primary goals is to dismantle the common expectation that with intelligence comes immediate understanding, and replace it with "comfort in confusion", a common pedagogical concept in mathematics teaching that emphasizes the advantages of being able to think and navigate around a concept while not yet understanding it.
I tutor all high school mathematics, high school Chemistry and Physics, high school writing, the following college level topics: Linear Algebra, Calculus I-IV, Differential Equations, Number Theory, and the following standardized tests: SAT, ACT, PSAT/NMSQT, SAT II Math I, SAT II Math II, SAT II Chemistry, SAT II Physics, AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Chemistry, AP Physics-Mechanics, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition. I also advise college applications and college application essays, and can walk you through the entire process of essay writing, from topicality, general strategies, to final proofreading. Particularly, I offer online editing of your essays through Google Docs, so it is possible to receive feedback frequently and in real time as your essay progresses.

We feel so fortunate to have found Zane! Ivan's grade went up after a few sessions. Very strong in math and science. We hope to reconnect after the summer! He knows the material and has good teaching skills
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I scored an 800 on one attempt of the Chemistry SAT II Subject test, a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam as a sophomore, completed with high marks college classes on Thermodynamics and Quantum Mechanics at Indiana University, and used basic chemistry and physics extensively in my role as a competitor and captain of my high school's Science Olympiad team.
I took an honors, proof-based, computer-application-integrated version of this class at Indiana University. I also have used the material in a variety of subjects such as chemistry and particularly complex ordinary and partial differential equations in physics classes on mechanics, relativity, and quantum mechanics. I've also approached the material from a theoretical side, looking at sets of solutions of differential equations, interrelations with linear algebra, and numerical methods.
I've taken this class twice: Once in high school, at Indiana University, where I was exposed to a honors version of the material: a rigorous treatment specifically oriented towards proofs and theory. I then took the class again at Columbia, as part of the combined Linear Algebra/Real Analysis proof-based "Honors Math". I've also used the material extensively in advanced math classes on Abstract Algebra and computer programming.
