In addition to being a tutor, I'm part of the editorial staff at a Big Five publisher, so I love talking about books and words-- and because I'm a well-rounded nerd, I'm also a huge fan of math and the sciences, especially astronomy.

I moved to New York in 2016 after a summer volunteering abroad as an ESL teacher and curriculum developer. Before that, I studied English and Linguistics at UCLA while helping other undergrads polish essays for lower and upper-division classes. I also taught fifth-graders creative writing and volunteered as a tutor for UCLA Housekeeping employees who wanted to gain confidence in their ability to speak English! Studying at UCLA was an incredibly rewarding experience that solidified my interest in being a tutor and mentor.

Education has been an enormous part of my life-- I grew up on a college campus before attending UCLA, so I've been immersed in an academic environment since I was born. I love sharing knowledge with people, but, more importantly, I love helping my students figure out the world around them. Many concepts that seem dry or abstract have really innovative real-life applications, and I like to incorporate these examples to create memorable lessons. I'm also keen on personalizing my lessons for individual students-- no matter how well I know the material, it becomes a continuous journey of discovery every time I teach it. And while I do think some things are harder to learn than others, I also believe that students can learn anything if someone takes the time to help them understand it.

--Qualifications--

(GRE Verbal Score: 169
GRE Quantitative Score: 165)
I've been formally tutoring the Quantitative and Qualitative sections of the GRE for three years now, and am very comfortable with college-level math and English-- I used to help my peers with GRE prep as an undergraduate.

(SAT Math Score: 760)
I provide strong real-world math applications: weather forecasts are a fantastic way to understand probability, for instance, and a food like pizza provides an unbeatable incentive to focus on fractions and percentages.

(SAT Reading Score: 800)
I was an English and Linguistics major in college; I also have roughly three years of experience editing college-level essays. I've been reading ever since I started first grade. I'm uniquely qualified to teach English as a Second or Foreign Language given that I've spent over a decade abroad, so I'm used to conversing with people whose first language is not English. Lastly, as a language learner myself (Spanish is harder than I thought it would be!), I have so much empathy for people learning a new language!

I look forward to setting up a lesson with you! I strive to be the sort of tutor you can ask questions of and offer suggestions to. Your input is essential for me to make a lesson plan that truly helps you, so include anything that you think is relevant, and don't be afraid to ask for clarification! I'll get back to you very soon :)

I've been in love with reading since I was four, and I'm always eager to show people the fun in reading, even if they have to get through school-assigned books! I was an English major in college, so I know the pain of dissecting books that seem impossible to understand.

While earning a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and English at UCLA, I also took creative writing workshops that developed my ability to critique other writing constructively.

Patient, non-judgemental, professional.

I had my first lesson with Tanu for the GRE. I was a bit worried since this was my first time using Wyzant but I am glad I went with Tanu for my first lesson. As someone who hasn’t done any kind of math in....years I was going into this lesson a little bit clueless. She took the time to explain not only how I should approach the GRE questions, where my focus should be and also how to solve certain GRE questions. I will be making future lessons with her.

Very Knowledgeable

Great first GRE session with Tanu. She definitely knows her stuff and was able to suggest different ways for me to approach some of the tougher problems. Looking forward to session 2.

Jerod, 1 lesson with Tanu

Patient and very helpful.

We went over some homework and some previous questions I had, and she was very patient. Even though I needed explanation more than once she was open to it with a smile.
