In graduate school the classes came alive for me when the teachers gave individual feedback and showed enthusiasm for what they were teaching. They welcomed asking questions. Students need to know how to master a task to make learning a rewarding experience. That's how I teach my students.
I have my masters from Bank St. College and graduate credits from Columbia University and City College. I've specialized in teaching reading/writing in K-5 as well as early literacy skills in pre-K. My experience as a tutor has been extremely successful.
I plan creative lessons that make learning enjoyable. My lessons are based on an evaluation, so that each lesson is tailored to the student's needs. Writing, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and phrasing are all covered. I can keep a student's attention focused if it begins to wander, and I will work with a child's teacher so their progress reflects in the classroom.

We are so happy to have found a committed, reliable and experienced tutor for our child. Karen has many years of experience working as a teacher - her ease with children and limitless tools show that. She is encouraging and sensitive, making each tutoring session an engaging one for our child. Reading has now become less of a chore and our child is already feeling more comfortable and improving in this area.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
