About Melissa

Hi, my name is Melissa and I have been teaching and tutoring for 15 years. Currently, I am working on my MSEd in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities, 1st – 6th, at Hunter College. I will be transitioning to the PhD program next year.

I have taught math, social studies, English in general education settings and for students with disabilities. I am familiar with the New York State core curriculum and the demands of Manhattan private schools (I went to Dalton.)

I love what I do and take pride in my student's long term success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been tutoring for 15 years and worked with students with ADHD in small group and one on one settings.

Autism

I worked at a private school for children with ASD and have completed advanced course work at Hunter in ASD. I taught summer school at k053, a district 75 school, in a self contained 6:2:1 setting, all 6 of my students were nonverbal and on the spectrum

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with elementary school children inside a classroom setting and privately one-on-one for over 10 years. Currently, I am working with two Dalton students, one in kindergarten and the other in 3rd grade. I love what I do and take pride in my student's long term success.

Currently I am completing my MSEd at Hunter College in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities.

Homeschool

I home schooled one of my former students at the Quad Preparatory School for one school year. I wrote the curriculum and when his parents found a school they were happy with he was evaluated to be at grade level.
