About Cheryl

I am a NYS Certified Special Education & General Education teacher. I have my licenses and my Masters Degree +30 in Special Education Birth-2 and General Education Birth-2 as well as Special Education K-6 and General Education K-2. My love for teaching started very young. I babysat, nannied and tutored children all through my high-school, college, and graduate school career and I knew teaching was not only my passion but my calling in life. There is nothing better to me than seeing your students learn, grow and succeed throughout the school year.

I am currently a 6th year ICT teacher in second grade specializing in students with special needs. I teach elementary reading, writing, and math, as well as test prep for the state ELA and Math Exams (grades 3-6). I have taught test prep for ELA and Math during after-school, Saturday School and Summer School for over 5 years now.

I will differentiate the tutoring sessions based on the students needs and capabilities. Progress reports are provided as well as assessments, and homework if I feel the child may need extra help on a specific subject.

I am available Monday & Tuesdays after 4pm, Wednesdays & Thursdays after 3pm, and Saturdays 9am-12pm. I can travel to students home, libraries, or student may meet me at my home on the Upper East Side of NYC. My hourly rate is $100/hour, or $50/half hour. If lesson packages are requested I can offer hourly sessions at a discounted rate. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy.

I am trained in both the Wilson Fundations® program and the Fountas & Pinnell Literacy™ program and have used it throughout my teaching career. Based on the Wilson Reading System® principles, Wilson Fundations® provides research-based materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwriting program. Fountas & Pinnell Literacy™ is designed for high-quality literacy instruction. I am able to provide materials if need be.

Common Core Learning Standards have been a part of my teaching career for the past 3 years. I have had to align all lesson plans, student goals and IEP's to the common core standards. I also teach test prep for the ELA and Math tests grades 3-6 that are common core aligned.

I have taught elementary school for a little over 7 years now. My first year I taught a self contained (12:1:1) 6th grade class. My 2nd, 5th and 6th year I taught a 2nd grade ICT class, and my 3rd and 4th year I taught a 3rd grade ICT class. On Saturday and After-School I have taught 3rd and 4th grade classes and during Summer School I have taught all grades 2-5. I also have a certification in early childhood birth-2 for both general and special education.

I have been a special education teacher for the past 6 years. My Masters degree specializes in Students with Disabilities (Behavior and Learning Disorders). I have a license in Special Education Birth-6th grade as well as a license for General Education. I am certified in ABA training and have experience with students who are diagnosed with Autism, ADD/ADHD, emotional disturbed, learning disabled, speech and language and OHI.
The phonics program I use and the one I am trained in is the Wilson Fundations® Program. It is a systematic program in critical foundational skills, emphasizing Phonemic awareness, Phonics/ word study, reading fluency and other specialized skills. This program is common core aligned.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions and I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
