About Jennifer

I've been a classroom teacher for 1st-3rd grade for five years. I teach reading, writing, and math for grades 2 and 3 currently. I have experience tutoring children in elementary and middle school focusing on reading and writing. I plan my lessons following the Common Core Standards and I implement Teacher's College Reading and Writing Units of Study in my balanced literacy curriculum. What I love most about tutoring is having the opportunity to work one-on-one with students, something that most students might not get during the regular school day. I celebrate milestones, big and small, with my students and really push them to self-advocate and self-assess, rewarding themselves when they've achieved a goal!

I love math! I especially love that there are so many ways to represent numbers and counting. whether they're pictures, numbers, or words. I also support math with literacy, using the Singapore method of model drawing to solve math word problems.

Please reach out to me if you're looking for a lower elementary tutor in literacy and/or math!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I've taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade math and I enjoy using a program which is an interactive, materials-based method based on the Common Core Standards.

Special Needs

I have 5 years of classroom experience in both inclusion and self-contained models. My students have had a range of special needs, including Autism, ADHD, Opositional Defiance Disorder, and learning disabilities in various subject matter. I typically have different expectations for each of my students, taking the time to understand their learning and emotional needs and developing a trusting relationship so that we can work toward their learning goals together.
