About Walker

I hold Masters degrees in both Vocal Performance and Music Theory. I am a classically trained operatic tenor, pianist, and vocal coach. I've performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, Cincinnati Opera, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Princeton Festival, and internationally in Mexico, Germany, and Austria. I have over 8 years of private voice and group voice teaching experience. I teach and coach within all styles, but I specialize in classical and jazz. I am very comfortable teaching pop voice and musical theater, as well. I can teach vocal technique, musical style, sight-singing and ear-training, and with 15+ years of piano, I can accompany your lessons. I also can transpose and read charts as well. Additionally, I specialize in training Adolescent Voices (this was the subject of my Masters Thesis) and larger, powerful instruments.

When it comes to singing, I believe that singing is natural and instinctual and should be taught as such. My goal is to give every singer the tools to create beautiful sounds and to make artistic and expressive choices within their performances. Every voice is unique (color, timbre, size, weight, range, etc.) and should be treated as such. I will tailor a vocal coaching plan for each singer, based on where they are whey they arrive. I do NOT believe in “Cookie-Cutter” voices, but I hope to allow each singer to use their own natural strengths to their advantage. I work quickly and efficiently, ensuring that time and money are not wasted. I believe in working at the desired pace of the singer and will get as much done as possible in one session. What I offer is REAL TRAINING and REAL TECHNIQUE, without stringing you along for months to see results.

I am funny, engaging, and will always keep your attention. I taught an 8am Freshman Music Theory course as a graduate student and received wonderful reviews from my students. I know how to tailor a tutoring/coaching for my individual student. I work quickly, efficiently, and always try to keep what we are doing fun. I believe that music has the power to heal and that we should sing for love.

I'm looking for dedicated, bright, and energetic students who want to absorb as much about music as possible. I am a passionate teacher and I am looking for passionate students. If this is you, contact me for a lesson! Let's make beautiful music together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have a Masters Degree in Music Theory from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where I taught Sight-Singing and Ear-Training at the Collegiate level for 2 years. I have played piano for over 15 years and did NOT play by year. Through years of learning theory and eartraining in school, I understand how to teach this to students who are beginning. I also understand how to apply basic eartraining skills to the practical world, such as harmonizing a vocal line or understanding patterns in harmonic progressions to deduce chords in a song. I believe I am extremely qualified to teach this.

Piano

I have been playing piano for over 15 years and have worked primarily as an accompanist within my own voice studio and choir classes. Though I am classically trained and read music quite proficiently, I really am particularly good at popular styles and chart reading. I am a singer who plays piano and can really specialize in teaching piano and piano skills to singers who want to learn both. I understand classical, jazz, and popular styles. I believe I would be a very good tutor for piano, for the right student. (Not right for a student wanting to study Rachmaninoff or Chopin.)

Sight Singing

I have a Masters Degree in Music Theory. I have also served as a professional choral singer for over 11 years (NY Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Cincinnati Opera, and the Mostly Mozart Festival). I understand what it takes to teach sight-singing to singers, how we process music differently that instrumentalists, and how to realistically apply this skill to the real world in order to find a job. I believe I am extremely qualified to teach this.

Voice (Music)

I have a Masters Degree in Voice from Indiana University (rated in the top 3 voice schools in the country). I have been a working Choral singer for over 11 years and a working opera singer for over 5. I have owned and operated a voice studio for 8 years and have taught group lessons and choral classes for over 7 years. I am a pianist, I know lyric diction, voice ranges, adolescent development, and correct vocal technique. I have a great knowledge of repertoire, particularly classical art songs and musical theater pieces. I believe I am very qualified to tutor this subject.
