About Ashley

Although my span of knowledge has grown monumentally through my years of education in an academic setting, I have never learned more than when through my experiences with tutoring and teaching others. I feel incredibly passionate about learning and this passion is clearly reflected through my ability to help others learn through structured learning, but more importantly, through fun methods that can engage just about any student at any age! My favorite part about tutoring is most certainly not the end of the session when the learning has come to end for that day, but rather, the best part about tutoring, in my opinion, is having the ability to see the acquired knowledge put to use, and furthermore, the happiness that is demonstrated through a child's recognition of their own accomplishments.

My experience working at the NYU Summer Program for Kids the last three summers has provided me with the most amazing experience in which I have developed the necessary skills required for helping children with special needs. I have worked with children struggling with ADHD, ODD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, learning disorders, and anxiety disorders and truly feel that I am able to provide the best possible care and experience for children who need some extra help and attention!

My professional and academic experiences thus far have provided me with the basis to assist in any areas of learning that a child may require. I will provide a learning environment that helps to facilitate progress in terms of academics and self-esteem, and guarantee we will have a lot of fun in the process!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

My most extensive area of knowledge and experience is with children with ADHD, due to working at the NYU Child Study Center's Summer Program for Kids. Before the program began with the children we were required to go through 4 weeks of intensive training in Applied Behavioral Analysis and behavior modification, non-violent crisis prevention and rapport-building methods. Following training, I was responsible for facilitating the improvement of target behaviors of these children with ADHD and was able to put my training and academic accumulation on the disorder to use and see true improvement in each child in my group for three summers in a row. This past summer, I was responsible for training the new incoming counselors in all of the previously listed areas and I am certain that this is my strongest subject.

Autism

In addition to working with children who struggle with ADHD, many of the children who attended the summer program I worked at were diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well. Through working at the NYU Summer Program for Kids, I have developed the skills required for both tutoring and providing support to children with ASD.

Lacrosse

Throughout high school I was a member of the varsity lacrosse team and played on the club lacrosse team during my first few years of college as well.

Soccer

Throughout my years of high school I was on the varsity soccer team and during the three summers I worked at the NYU Summer Program for Kids I was responsible for coaching children in the basic concepts of soccer as well as how to properly participate and play the sport with good sportsmanship.

Special Needs

I took part in 3 Summers of NYU Child Study Center's Summer Program for Kids where I had extensive training in Applied Behavioral Analysis, non-violent crisis prevention, rapport-building methods, and implementation of treatment tailored to each child's individual and specific needs. Furthermore, I was the lead counselor this past summer and had daily interactions with clinical supervisors to ensure best treatment was given as well as to review ways to best train the other counselors.

Study Skills

In addition to teaching children at the NYU Summer Program for Kids, for the past three years I have worked with a child with ADHD and ODD on study skills and proper time management as well as providing tutoring and homework help.
