About Gabriel

Pianist Gabriel has been recognized nationally and internationally, and is a performer who enjoys presenting under-performed works and engaging with audiences during concerts. Festival appearances include the 2016 Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he was a finalist in the concerto competition and had numerous solo, collaborative, and ensemble performances, the Lindlar Internationales Klavierfestival, which he attended between 2011-2015, and the 2014 Val Tidone International Music Festival Summer Camp in Italy with master class teacher Andrzej Jasinski. In his home state of New Mexico, Gabriel has performed numerous solo recitals with repertoire ranging from Bach to Rzewski, and in the summer of 2016 he recorded Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the recently established Duke Symphonette. Awarded First Prize in the 2012 Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition, he made his orchestra debut with the New Mexico Philharmonic, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5. He also won First Prize in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) New Mexico State Piano Competition (senior division) in 2011 and 2012, and proceeded to compete in Las Vegas, Nevada and Ogden, Utah. Also an active collaborative pianist, Gabriel has played with numerous vocal and instrumental duos, as well as large ensembles, including the University of New Mexico Wind Symphony, UNM Symphony Orchestra, and church choirs. He also enjoys playing other music styles, such as pop and jazz. Gabriel began playing piano at age five with his mother as his first teacher, and was accepted into the studio of Falko Steinbach at the University of New Mexico when he was fourteen. As a piano teacher, Gabriel has experience teaching adult beginner students, but is eager to expand his range of students to all ages and levels! His students have admired his patience and commented about their improved abilities in technique and expression.

Gabriel graduated from the University of New Mexico summa cum laude in May 2016 with a Bachelor of Music in Performance and a Second Major in German. He began learning German as a Freshman, and he studied abroad at the University of Music in Würzburg, Germany in 2014-2015. Gabriel has written numerous scholarly papers in German about music and literature, including his Honors Thesis Die Vorstellung von Elfen in Romantischen Kunstmärchen (The Portrayal of Elves in Romantic Literary Fairy Tales).

Currently, he is a Master of Music Student at the Manhattan School of Music under Arkady Aronov. An avid writer, Gabriel is working on a fantasy fiction novel. He also enjoys reading, soccer, and playing board games.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I believe I have the ability to tutor the subject since I have taken several aural skills classes in the course of my college education. I am very familiar with class structure and the various methods used, including interval and chord detection, melody dictation, two-voice dictation, harmonic dictation, and rhythmic dictation.

German

I began studying German in 2012, and in 2016 I graduated with a Second Major in German from the University of New Mexico (my primary major being Music Performance). I have written numerous scholarly papers about music and literature in German, including an Honors Thesis, for which I was awarded the Excellence in German Studies Book Award by the UNM Department of Foreign Languages. At the Lindlar Internationales Klavierfestival in 2015, I was a featured emcee, where I presented self-written program notes in front of a live audience.

Piano

I have been playing piano since I was five years old, and am currently a Master of Music Student in Piano Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of New Mexico. I have extensive performance experience as a soloist, accompanist, and collaborative pianist, and have two years of teaching experience.
