About Frank

I have taught grades 4 through 6 over a 31 year period in NYC schools It was fun and inspiring and now continues through tutoring. My expertise is in mathematics, social studies and English grammar and composition. The students I tutor range from grades two to seven. Chess is my real love. I've run tournaments and have taught many trophy winners. And it's all fun. If learning is not enjoyable the lessons slip away.

I was THE math teacher in grades 4 through 6. I've had many students who came to me grades behind, caught up to their levels, and then surpassed it. "I hate math" turned into "I get it! This is easy!"

My college co-major was English composition. I'm old-school grammar (love parts of speech), and emphasize that all good writing is rewriting. Teaching in a religiously-based school, I know the Bible inside out.

I am an American history nut!! Can't get enough of it. Member of Fraunces Tavern and constantly read books on our founding fathers and more.

I would love to teach chess, social studies, elementary math, and English language arts. NYC is my classroom. The trees, the birds, all around us is a lesson waiting to happen. I would enjoy tutoring the youth in this vibrant, energetic city as I have done in the classroom.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I taught for 31 years in Catholic schools. As part of the curriculum, I was required to teach catechism. Twenty-seven of those years, as a grade 6 teacher, I spent three-quarters of the year covering the Old Testament and remainder of the school year in the New Testament. I have read the Bible through several times and make sure I read a bit each day. Bible prophecy and the daily news go hand in hand.

Chess

As an elementary school teacher for 31 years, I added chess to the curriculum via its relationship to the Middle Ages (king, queen, knights, etc.) I ran school tournaments and escorted students to weekend tourneys near Carnegie Hall. We many times returned to school on Mondays with both individual and school-wide trophies. One weekend we even took first place by defeating the Dalton School! I have been accepted as a chess teacher by AES/Chess Scholars.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was an elementary school teacher for 31 years, having taught grade 6 for 27 years, grade 5 for three years, and grade 4 for a single year. During most of my stint as a grade six instructor, I also taught 5th-grade mathematics. In the past year I have tutored students in grades 2 through 7. My degree is in early childhood education.

Elementary Math

I have 31 years of teaching experience in grades 4 through 8, specializing in mathematics. I majored in Elementary Education, and have tutored students for the past two years, mainly in math.
