About Andree

Having graduated with a B.A. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard in May 2016, I am now pursuing a master's degree in cello performance at The Juilliard School.

A native of Montana, my past teachers include Richard Aaron and Hans Jensen; I currently studies with Joel Krosnick. I graduated with distinction from the Royal Conservatory of Music piano program, which includes examinations in music theory and history. As a member of the Werner Quartet with my three siblings, I have performed at the Music Guild Concert Series in Los Angeles, Montana State University's President's Fine Arts Series and Faculty Guest Artist Series, The Congress of Luthiers in France, Provincehuis in Groningen, Holland, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and on NPR's "From the Top". In March of 2012, the Werner Quartet gave their debut performance at Carnegie Hall and in 2015 performed at the Supreme Court for Ruth Bader Ginsburg's 82nd birthday celebration.

I have been dedicated to teaching and giving back from a young age. In both academic subjects and music, I have had experience with one-on-on tutoring and music instruction, as well as larger classroom teaching and mentoring. I have given private piano and cello lessons for beginners, and intensive private tutoring in Math and English. Through Harvard University's largest public service organization PBHA, I engaged in one-on-one and small group tutoring in high school math, science, and English to female inmates at Boston area prisons. I was part of PBHA's Mission Hill Afterschool Program, providing after school enrichment and homework assistance to inner city students. I have mentored at-risk teen girls at Wyoming Girls School State Facility. While at home in Montana, I has given my time to introducing music and musical instruments to rural school children with no access to music programs in their schools.

I have had experience tutoring basic math to students of all levels, not only children that may be struggling with concepts, but also gifted students who move quickly but struggle understanding underlying reasoning. I help to build concrete foundations in basic math so that students can continue to excel in math without hitting a wall, as many students do in high school.
I have not only worked with kids but also adults, who fell behind in school, and are working to catch up to high school equivalency levels in math. This has given me experience in working with people from many different profiles and math levels.

Sentence structure and English grammar are rarely taught as part of the core curricula anymore. I feel that this is one of the most important skills one can have. It helps in reading and analyzing literature, and forming thoughtful, precise language in one's writing. I studied English grammar and diagramming extensively when I was young, even presenting a formal, academic paper at an international linguistics conference when I was in high school.
English literature is a passion of mine. I'm a voracious reader and have read most of the classics. I enjoy hearing student's impressions of stories and helping them craft thoughtful summaries and analyses.

I have played cello and piano since I was 6 years old. Music has been a central part of my studies throughout my life. I understand the joy and dedication that comes with practicing and performing. I am now a master's student at Juilliard School of Music in cello performance. I have taught beginners on both cello and piano, as well as more advanced students. I understand intricacies of technique and am familiar with repertoire and programs suited for many different levels.
Basic music theory and ear training are very helpful in developing into a good musician. I believe it helps students play their instruments better if they have a framework for the music beyond the craft of playing the instrument.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. My skills aren't limited to what I have listed here on my profile. I enjoy tutoring elementary math but am able to do math tutoring for many different levels, including high school algebra/calculus and SAT Math.
I am able to tutor in SAT writing and reading. as well.
I can teach piano, music theory, and music history from elementary through high school.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cello

I have studied cello and piano since I was 5 years old. I studied the Suzuki method for a few years and quickly graduated to more advanced repertoire. I have studied with some of the country's leading cello teachers, Richard Aaron, Hans Jorgen Jensen, and currently Joel Krosnick. I am earning my master's of cello performance at The Juilliard School currently. I have experience playing chamber music as well.

Ear Training

I have studied ear training, including intervals, chord quality, solfege singing, and dictation concurrently with my musical training for many years. I am now taking graduate level ear training courses at The Juilliard School where I am pursuing a master's degree in cello performance. I feel that having a foundation in ear training is critical to becoming a stronger musician.
