About Rebecca

Since I was in elementary school, I've always known I wanted to be a teacher. I love working with people and helping them achieve academic success. For the past five years, I've taught middle school English language Arts in New York City. I have worked in both charter and traditional public schools and enjoy working with all types of students. I currently teach 90 wonderful 7th graders in the Bronx. Before moving to New York, I also tutored elementary students in all subjects and taught English to adult speakers of other languages. I love working one-on-one with students and helping them reach their full potential.

I received my Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Teachers College in 2012. This program taught me how to break down the English language and make it accessible to both native and non-native English speakers. Since then, I have taught English to a mixed group of general education and ESL students. I enjoy teaching all aspects of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English.

I love languages and majored in Spanish for my undergraduate degree. After graduating from the University of Missouri, I spent two years serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, where I was forced to practice my Spanish everyday and really get good at it. Because I learned Spanish as a second language, I understand what it feels like to study it as a non-native speaker and can help students become confident with learning it as well.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have about scheduling an online or in-person tutoring session. Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

My graduate school courses in education at Teachers College prepared me to write Common Core- aligned curriculum. For the past five years, I have submitted daily lesson plans and quarterly unit plans that meet Common Core standards. I am familiar with the Common Core K-12 Standards for both literacy and math.

Elementary (K-6th)

In March 2012, I received my Masters in Education from Teachers College in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. As part of my coursework, I had to take classes geared towards preparing me to work in an elementary school setting. I also student taught in a 4th grade classroom for two months. I am certified to teach Kindergarten- 12th grade in New York state. From Fall 2013 to Spring 2016, I taught 6th grade English to ESL and general education students in the Bronx.

Phonics

Last summer, I attended a course at Teachers College, Columbia University entitled "Cutting Edge Techniques in Teaching Literacy to Below-Grade Readers". This course predominantly focused on how to incorporate phonics instruction when teaching students who have difficulty reading. I currently teach 7th grade English and I have many students who come to me and struggle with decoding texts. I work with them in small groups and one-on-one to learn the skills necessary to increase their reading fluency.

Special Needs

In September 2015 I passed the Content Specialty Test for Students With Disabilities. This means that I am considered by New York State to be a highly qualified teacher of special education students. For the past three years I have also taught in integrated co-taught (ICT) classrooms in New York City. These classes have had a mix of general education and special education students. I believe this knowledge and experience gives me the necessary background in order to be a strong tutor for students with special needs.

Great tutor — Rebecca was very patient and kind. My son felt comfortable asking her questions and she was able to assess his needs rather quickly considering this was the first time she worked with him. I also like that she is a middle school teacher herself and has experience with my sons age group. We will definitely use Rebecca again. ...
