I am Brooke S. and I am a 20 year old marketing student with a passion for helping and educating others. I was born in Harbin, China to a Chinese and mother and a American father. I grew up being educated in Harbin, China, New York, USA, and Tel Aviv, Israel. I have always been fascinated by languages ever since I was in elementary school, I learned to speak, write, and read English and Mandarin Chinese through family. As time progressed, my mom hired a Chinese tutor for our NYC home and I began to learn Chinese calligraphy as well as to type Chinese. I found teaching to be my true passion after I volunteered as an English teacher in a school in a very rural area in China. The underprivileged kids were between 8-10 years old and were so eager to to learn the English language and beyond. I have tutored Ramaz students who took Mandarin courses and needed more help with the writing, they passed the class with flying colors. I have also tutored NYU - Stern students who struggled to understand the economy in China and the current events affecting it that are not exposed in the media. I am very young and still in school myself and anticipate to graduate with a BBA in marketing in 2018 and proceed to law school. In addition to work I have done, I also found my language skills and knowledge of the cultures to be helpful in everyday life. Colleges across the NYC area are getting a plethora of international students who hail from mainland China, these kids are either the kids of the "nouveau riche" or of government officials and prominent business figures. In interacting with them on a regular basis in school by helping them with their classes, activities outside of the school, and most importantly, getting used to living in a foreign country away from home has made me want to spread make the language more known and that people all over the world are able to communicate and help each other.
I have received 7 years of one-on-one Mandarin tutoring, able to translate simultaneously in hospitals and courts, read, write, type and communicate in Mandarin. I am also an expert on Chinese social medias (WeChat, Weibo) as well as the Chinese economy and social issues not exposed to the rest of the world, I read Chinese news articles and have contributed to Sina.com, one of the largest news sources in China. In addition, I have passed the NYU 12 point exam and have had extensive tutoring experience. Thank you for taking the time and reading my profile, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns or message me with you or your child's needs and see if we can set up a plan to help reach your goal(s). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
