About Ben

During this summer, I wrote a lesson plan and led a drawing workshop at The Door, a center for homeless and at risk youth. I arranged a series of drawing exercises and a discussion framework for the resulting illustrations. I especially liked this experience because I was able to combine my background in public speaking with my training as an artist. For the past five years, I have worked in the Visitor Engagement department of MoMA PS1. In this position, I act as a docent and tour guide, explaining a wide array of artistic concepts to an international audience. Additionally, I work as a tour guide for Great New York Tours, leading groups of up to thirty participants on historic trips throughout New York City. In this role, I must be both an educator and entertainer while describing important architectural sites and political history as well as the poetry of everyday life in New York. I put in a great deal of research for my tours and I have also helped write scripts for my fellow tour guides in New York
and for tour guides in San Francisco.

I recently graduated from Hunter College and would like to put my ease at communicating abstract concepts to a positive use. I also am extremely comfortable with the English language. I have had reviews published, I have done academic research in a professional capacity, I can explain Socratic logic and american history with ease. additionally, I play chess at a fairly serious level, and have developed lesson plans for its instruction.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
