About Jacklyn

I first began teaching at the local library. While completing my MA in English I was looking for a part-time job that would give me a break from 18th Century British Literature (my specialty) while still allowing me to work with students. I began helping elementary and middle school students with their homework and later led preschool story times.

When offered a position teaching writing at the University, I found my passion. Writing is the most powerful tool we have at our disposal. As I helped students sort through their ideas and put their words on paper, I realized that writing is hard and takes practice, work and guidance. Over the last six years I have had the opportunity to work with professional writers and students and have developed a unique skill set and ability to offer one-on-one support tailored to the learner's needs.

My professional background includes a stint as an assistant to an author on his telling of the true story about a bad boy New Jersey restaurateur turned diplomat to North Korea; a role as the writer for a financial institution; the lead communications specialist for an international law firm; my current position writing for an education technology company; and, always, positions teaching and tutoring in English and writing.

My goal is to help my students find not only their voice but their confidence in the words that voice wishes to say.

I have worked with hedge fund managers on financial presentations, lawyers on legal briefs, professors on academic papers and students on essays for class and college admissions. My approach is one-on-one collaborative sessions where we talk, write and explore arguments and ideas.

I love to read but understand that not every students shares that passion. With English work, I hope to inspire curiosity and appreciation for books and for the worlds they create.

I am available after 5 during the week and afternoons and evening on the weekends.

I have xtensive training in the theory and practice of teaching writing, Certificate of eligibility in Teaching English for NJ (Score in top 95% on Praxis exam, graduated cum laude in undergraduate and summa cum laude in graduate

I love to read and write and hope to help you find that you at least like it a little bit as well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
