About Ben

I'm an experienced teacher with a passion for investing in my clients, and helping them reach the highest level of their potential. My teaching focuses on advanced students (high school age and above) who are looking to rise above their peers. Often, their goals lie at the highest levels of academia, the workplace, Broadway, or the concert hall.

My students have attended some of the country's most prestigious colleges and universities, including Princeton, the University of Chicago, Brown, NYU, Northwestern, Emory, and the University of Cambridge, and have held positions at Microsoft, Arthur Anderson, Amazon, and the US State Department.

SAT/ACT PREP for ENGLISH sections and the ESSAY

I have more than three years' experience as a private SAT/ACT tutor. My approach synthesizes the most trusted methods on the market (Kaplan, Barron's, Princeton Review), and encourages students to speed their progress by fearlessly investigating their weaknesses and blind spots. As a consequence, lessons quickly become tailored to the unique needs of each student as we work to close gaps in knowledge, increase speed and accuracy, and promote optimal study habits. Again and again, I've seen this approach boost my students' confidence, raise their test scores, and get them that coveted acceptance letter.

WRITING

I have more than five years' experience teaching Academic and Professional Writing to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Chicago. In addition, I've helped dozens of private students and professionals with writing projects including admissions essays, cover letters, dissertations, and even informal emails. With each client, I employ straightforward techniques that help to break open the "mystery" of effective writing, and enhance the impact and clarity of their project.

MUSIC

I hold both undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Music Composition, and have taught music theory, piano, composition, ear training, and audition coaching to a wide array of students. In addition, I have worked for over eight years with one of the most successful shows in Broadway history - JERSEY BOYS. I have been the Music Director for both of its national touring companies, and a member of the casting table in NYC, where hundreds of candidates audition for the show.

When I'm not teaching, I'm a pianist, conductor, composer, and proud uncle (x3). I've worked on Broadway, I've toured across the US, Canada, and Japan, and I've had my compositions performed by two Grammy-Award-winning ensembles. I'm also an avid traveler, hiker, reader, and photographer, and feel very lucky that my tutoring work continues to motivate students in the disciplines that have been such a big part of my life.

I am currently accepting new clients for in-person or Skype/Internet sessions.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, or just to talk further before setting up an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I began composing music informally at age 12, and hold both a Bachelor's degree and a Ph.D. in Music Composition. My works have been performed internationally, on two continents, and by two Grammy-Award-winning ensembles. I have been awarded the Jacob K Javits Fellowship and the University of Chicago's Whiting Dissertation Fellowship largely on the strength of my compositions.

Ear Training

During my undergraduate study in music composition, I took four semesters of ear training courses, from basic diatonic ear training, up through atonal ear training. As an arranger for a wide array of ensembles - from pit orchestras, to vocal music, to jazz bands, I continually have transcribed arrangements that rely on my prior ear training to transcribe and/or arrange the musical score. I have also taught ear training and transcription to a major jazz recording artist in the Chicago area.

Piano

I have taken active piano lessons from the time I was five years old, until graduating undergraduate school at the age of twenty-two with a degree that included four years of private piano study. I have taught piano lessons privately for over five years, to a wide range of ages and ability levels. As a professional, my music career continues to rely heavily on my piano playing. I have been a keyboardist and conductor for a major Broadway show, as well as involvement with music theatre projects at the Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey, the Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, and the Big Apple Circus.

Proofreading

I hold a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and have 5+ years of teaching Academic and Professional Writing. I also have extensive editing and proofreading of hundreds of admissions essays, research papers, dissertations, and business proposals. My tutoring focuses on straightforward, powerful techniques that elevate the impact and value of your work.

Songwriting

I hold a PhD in Music Composition, and have privately taught composition to students of high school age and above. My compositions have been performed by two Grammy Award-Winning ensembles, and my work in music theatre has brought me into contact with some of the newest compositions and songwriting teams for the stage. I also have practical experience in a recording studio setting, seeing how songs make the jump from the page to ProTools, often in a high-pressure and time-constrained environment.

Voice (Music)

As an undergraduate, I accompanied dozens of singers at one of the country's foremost music programs, gaining access to their lessons, their professors, and an ocean of teaching methods about voice. As a conductor, I have worked with countless singers/actors in a major Broadway touring production, helping them master the elements necessary for vocal success in the show. As a member of that show's casting team in NYC, I'm continually adjudicating and fine-tuning the vocal work of hundreds of audition candidates, evaluating their ability to succeed, and giving them new ways to think about their singing of a particular song.
