About Carolyn

I've been teaching university undergraduates and graduates for 17 years and have loved every minute of it. I'm also a professional writer having written or edited six non-fiction books published by major publishers, as well as many magazine and Internet articles. At Pace University I teach two freshman classes each year, and in their writing samples, I immediately see the problems that they have, especially essay construction, paragraph construction, sentence construction, and punctuation (typically over- or under-use of commas). I also emphasize proofreading, and show students that is can be like a treasure hunt, to scope out incomplete or run-on sentences, inadequate or misapplied punctuation, and general syntax.

Well-executed essays are not rocket science: there is a concrete formula that any student in can learn. I help students break down the essay into its constituent parts: the thesis which highlights the topics to be covered, then each paragraph that illuminates in turn each thesis point. Then we work on paragraph construction, making use of the topic sentence, and assuring that each sentence flows from the one before. Then we look at sentence construction to make sure that each sentence or clause has a subject and verb. Then we construct the conclusion to emphasize how the thesis has been proven or disproven. I a It's very rewarding to see improvement in students' writing ability and to see how excited they are to accomplish what has previously been seen as an impossible challenge. I can tutor up to 40 hours a week. I am available until September, 2016. I prefer morning or afternoon tutoring sessions, as well as online tutoring.

In addition to teaching, as a non-fiction writer I am used to being edited and corrected, and love to impart the rewards of this to students. I emphasize the structure of an essay, and it is rewarding to see how this demystified what may be a nebulous project for students. I also emphasize that proofreading scoping out topic sentences, logical flow from one sentence to another, picking out incomplete sentences and errant punctuation.

Writing interesting, "A" essays isn't rocket science. It is a formula that anyone can learn, and proofreading it to making your writing perfect is like a treasure hunt. Map out your topic before you start, and it's all there: you just have to follow the map to the treasure. Compose a thesis that entices the reader to discover what you want them to know. Compose topic sentences that draw the reader in. Create paragraphs that nail each point. Sum up your thesis in the conclusion. Then proof-read like a bloodhound. Scope out that run-on sentence and bring it to heel. Make that essay shine! It can be exciting to discover that writing excellent, "A" essays can be both fun and rewarding. I have a sure-fire, pain-free formula for writing excellent essays.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
