About Robert

I am a graduate of the Collegiate School in New York City, where I studied Latin for five years, as well as Ancient Greek for two. I am a prospective Classics major, and will be attending Yale University in the Fall. I have formally tutored students for four years, specifically in Latin, the subject in which I have the greatest experience and for which I have the greatest passion.

I have studied Latin for five years under Drs. Andrew Keller, Stephanie Russell and Michael Esposito, the first to of whom are the authors of Learn to Read Latin, a textbook/workbook book series used widely throughout the United States in both high school and collegiate institutions such as Yale University and Princeton University. For four years, I have tutored elementary, middle and high schoolers in Latin. In June, 2015 I scored 800 on the Latin SAT II Subject Test. In 2014, I won Second Place in the New York Classical Club's annual High School Latin Translation competition for my translation of Ovid. In 2016, I won First Place in the same competition for my translation of Caesar. In 2015, I also won Second Place in the New York Classical Club's annual Latin and Greek Recitation Contest for my oral delivery of two speeches, one by Vergil and one by Cicero. In the Fall I will attend Yale University, where I plan to continue my Latin studies.

Not only does the study of Latin foster a deeper understanding of grammar, syntax and rhetorical artistry, it also improves lingual dexterity in almost any other Indo-European language. Besides making one capable of reading great literature, Latin also is a very impressive subject in which to display proficiency. Coveted by colleges and professional workplaces, Latin simply provides students with a different perspective on the world; it allows contemplation of some of the most essential questions of human existence, and makes anyone's life far more complete. I am available for sessions in the evenings during weekdays, and virtually anytime on weekends.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Latin

I have studied Latin for five years at one of the best private schools in New York City, the Collegiate School. I will be attending Yale University in the Fall, to which I applied on the strength of my background in the Classics. I have won several prizes throughout high school in both recitation and translation, beating out both college and graduate students. I scored 800 in the Latin SAT II Subject Test, I have read works by Ovid, Cicero, Sallust, Vergil, Livy, Catullus and Horace, and am eager to pass on the knowledge I have gained over the years and to help develop a passion for the Classics in new students.
