About Burt

I am currently a “senior” lawyer, having mentored many young attorneys over the years. Indeed, seeing young lawyers flourish and grow professionally under my tutelage has been exceedingly satisfying and personally rewarding. Nearing retirement, I would like to able to continue this very personal interaction and help others of all ages to similarly realize their potential and goals.

Except for my professional mentoring experience, the extent of my one-on-one tutoring at this point is limited. I did teach one semester of business law at a technical college many years ago. Nevertheless, because of my love of mentoring, which is in effect tutoring, I feel that I will be very successful in this new endeavor and will be able to help those who ask me to do so.

I will provide tutoring in English (reading, writing, etc.), math (SAT math, pre-algebra, algebra, and elementary math), law, social studies, American history, and political science and government. My considerable expertise in each has evolved in different ways – through either formal education or self-learning and practice. For example, being able to communicate well and effectively, both orally and in writing, is critical to the practice of law. Communication is in fact the basic building block for success in the law profession. Good communicative skills, however, require continuous attention and practice. Indeed, through hard work, I have honed those skills over the years and now look to impart my knowledge and understanding of good communication to others.

Learning should be fun, and at times it can be challenging. Hard work and attention to detail are also key elements to learning. My aim, therefore, is to make my tutoring sessions enjoyable and stimulating. In return, I will expect my students to be focused and responsive, and to always attempt to do their best.

I am generally available for tutoring over the weekends or in the evenings during the week depending on meeting location. My base rate is generally in the $65 to $75/hour range. Depending on frequency, etc., however, I am willing to be flexible. Let's discuss your particular needs, and I am sure that we can arrive at some mutually acceptable arrangement.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Law

I am an attorney with substantial litigation, regulatory, and transactional experience in various areas of the law. I also have notable compliance experience having served as a Chief Compliance & Ethics Officer for a large multi-national, engineering firm. I have also sporadically taught selected subjects of the law.

Political Science

My knowledge and understanding of political science has evolved and grown in different ways. Indeed, through both formal education and practical experience, I have gained considerable insight into the workings of government and its impact on members of the general public.

My fascination and interest in political science began in college where I minored in government, taking several courses in political science. From there, I attended law school and have practiced law in various settings ever since. For a time (more than 8 years), I was the legal counsel for an association consisting of villages and cities. While in private practice, I have represented an array of governmental entities. Throughout my professional career, therefore, I have often been afforded the opportunity to immerse myself in the activities and affairs of local and state government.

Over the years, I have also served on various governmental boards and commissions, often taking a lead role on those bodies. For example, for a period of five years, I was elected to my community’s Board of Trustees (the governing body of the village). My participation on these bodies was, of course, extremely rewarding and quite invaluable, allowing me to acquire a perspective of government quite different from what the general public may typically have.

Until now, I have not specifically tutored the subject of political science. Nor have I taught political science in a formal, teacher-student setting. However, I am confident that my varied and unique background and training, including my considerable “real world” experiences, will more than compensate for my current lack of formal teaching experience. Political science is more than facts and theories – it is about people and their behavior within systems of government. I therefore look forward to being able to impart my enthusiasm for and knowledge of this subject to others through sharing, challenging and stimulating sessions.

Social Studies

Until now, I have not specifically tutored the subject of Social Studies. Nor have I taught social studies in a classroom type setting. However, despite my current lack of more “formal teaching” experience in social studies, I am still confident that in light of my educational training and professional background, I will be an effective tutor for you. Here is why.

Often misunderstood, Social Studies is not merely limited to the subjects of history and geography. It instead consists of a collection of many other varied but interrelated disciplines, including economics, law, political science, and other similar fields of study. Nor is social studies simply a compilation of historical facts. Knowing why historical events have unfolded as they have is equally important in understanding those so-called “facts.”

My tutoring of social studies will accordingly focus on both the historical events themselves and those events affecting or influencing them. My background and credentials allow for such a more “rounded” approach, which include:

• BA in economics;
• Graduate studies in economics;
• Course work in history;
• A practicing lawyer well steeped in the workings of government;
• A devotee of history and current events;
• A mentor/teacher of young attorneys.

The study of social studies can, and should be, be fun and relevant. Let me show you how.

Burt helped me analyze and better my understanding of a particular case. I enjoyed that he was patient and clear in explaining the terms and concepts we were working through. He was very knowledgeable in the particular subject we covered- Business law. I would highly recommend Burt to any student in need of tutoring.
