About Malvika

Hello hello!

I am a student at Columbia University in New York, double majoring in Comparative Literature and Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies. I have extensive experience as a student of English (grammar, syntax, etc.) English Literature, Global Studies, and Writing and Rhetoric (both creative and academic).

Before attending Columbia, I actually took a few years and worked as a teacher and independent tutor in a private school (The Chicago Free School) that focused on alternative models of education, as a K-1 Teacher in an after-school program serving the Chicago Public Schools (HPNC Learning Lab), and as a Hindi and French teacher for pre-K through grade-school age kids through a program (Lango) where I designed full-on immersive curricula that combine music, art, games, reading, and adventure!

I also worked on-and-off with families in Hyde Park, Chicago that collectively home-schooled their children, as a Teaching Artist in various programs. Finally, last August I received a Kathryn W. Davis Grant to plan and direct educational summer programming for children of various ages in the South Side of Chicago. I worked with children ages 6-15, focusing our lesson and activity plans on creative map-making and cartographies, cycles of plant growth, and issues of historic preservation within our own communities.

Finally, though I am by no means a huge fan of standardized testing, I recognize the ACT, SAT, and AP tests of the College Board as a necessary evil to getting into the best universities— and would love to help any high schoolers learn their best testing strategies and practices. (For the record, though I struggled with ADHD and a host of learning disabilities in middle and high school, I did eventually figure out a way to ~make the test work for me~ and received a 35 out of 36 on the ACT.)

Anyhow, this is all to say:

I love working with children and adults of any age, especially those who may find conventional methods or schooling different or constraining, and have a whole tool kit of interesting tricks and tactics I have gathered in order to help you conquer the material, the subject, the paper, the test!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Warm wishes,
Malvika

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
