About Sarah

I am a Certified teacher currently teaching at Stephen Gaynor School, a school for children with learning disabilities on the Upper West Side. Next year, I will start my role as a Learning Position at The Ramaz School. I am certified in a reading program, Orton- Gillingham and I am trained in Stern and Singapore Mathematics.

Teaching students is my passion. I believe in teaching methods that involve hands- on and creative learning. It is important for children to be exposed to various teaching techniques, and I enjoy bringing this aspect to tutoring. I enjoy tutoring within helping children with their homework and assignments, as well as supporting any learning area that needs more attention. Please reach out if you are interested in learning more about me!

I use Stern and Singapore Mathematics and have found these programs extremely helpful for students. I believe that using real life situations within the math class helps students understand the important of what they are doing.

I am certified in Orton-Gillingham, which is a systematic approach to reading and spelling. I also use the Basic Writing Skills program, which assists students organize their ideas to transfer into writing pieces.

I use rules taught through the systematic approach of Orton-Gillingham. Spelling is taught in a sequence, where a child learns to understand how the English language works.

I have my Master in special education with a specialization in Dyslexia. The school is a teach at is a school for children with Learning Disabilities, so I have experience teaching children with various types of reading disabilities. Through repetition, and multi- approaches, children with Dyslexia will be able to understand what it being taught.

I am highly qualified to tutor elementary aged children and looking for a summer tutoring position. I am also very open to continue the tutoring sessions once the school year begins as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I am qualified as a tutor for children with Dyslexia because I have my Masters in Special Education with a concentration in Learning Disabilities. I am also certified in Orton-Gillingham, a reading program that is an intensive, sequential phonics-based system. I am currently working at Stephen Gaynor School, a school for students with learning disabilities. Many of the students I teach have Dyslexia and other learning disabilities.
