About Christina

I'm a native New Yorker who is currently finishing up my doctorate at the CUNY Graduate Center. As a teenager I went to Bronx Science and got a near perfect score on my math SATs. In undergrad, at Northeastern University, I had the opportunity to begin working with students as a Teaching Assistant. In my first year of graduate school I began teaching my own courses and now have 8 years of experience teaching undergraduates at both Hunter and Brooklyn College.

I have taught ten different subjects at the college level, including statistics. Though I am a trained sociologist, I have retained my love for math even as I study society. In addition to being a college instructor, I have experience with two different fellowships related to pedagogy. As a Writing Across the Curriculum fellow at Bronx Community College, and an Instructional Technology Fellow at Macaulay Honors College, I worked with students and professors in myriad disciplines and various capacities, but the primary objective was to improve communication between teachers and students and ensure students understand what they need to do to complete their tasks.

Teaching and working with students has been the most gratifying part of graduate school. I not only enjoy, but am also very effective at helping students learn. I begin by identifying where students are in their understanding and work from there. What I like best about teaching math is that eventually there is a clear and exact answer. Math can be alienating if you don't understand it, but I can help students to find the path towards the answer. It's almost like a making a treasure map; first I find where the student is on the map, then we work together through the steps to get to the treasure.

In high school math was always my best subject. On both my SAT and GRE I got a 790 on my math sections. In graduate school I got an A+ in statistics. Though my primary work now is as a social theorist, I still very much enjoy math and look forward to working with students.

Please contact me with any questions you have. I'm happy to talk more and provide more information.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
