About Tyler

I'm a rising senior Economics major at Yale University. I'm an experienced tutor with strong results in standardized test prep: after only 4 sessions with me, my two most recent students increased their scores by 200 and 4 points on the math portions of SAT and ACT respectively. The former student had previously spent a full summer at a >$1500 test prep center, which didn't increase her score as much as 8 hours with me. I also have had great results with longer term prep and reading/writing tutoring: in tutoring my brother for the ACT over the course of a summer, I was able to raise his overall score from a 27 to a 35.

I gained experience tutoring elementary- and high school-aged students at the competitive private school I attended in Pasadena, CA, where I graduated with a 4.2 GPA as a National Merit Finalist (for a high PSAT score) and a National AP Scholar (for getting a perfect score of 5 on all eight of my AP exams). I self-studied for all of my standardized tests and received scores of 2380/2400 on my SAT (an 800 in Math), 35/36 on my ACT (a 36 in Math), and 780-800 on my various SAT 2 exams (including an 800 on the Math 2 exam).

I enjoy working though difficult concepts, not just forcing memorization of formulas but helping students to understand their application and significance. I've received perfect scores on all my standardized tests in Mathematics (SAT, SAT 2, ACT, AP Tests) and have helped other students to do the same!

I use a teaching strategy which combines practice tests and concept reviews, concentrating on "problem areas"--concepts which are consistently difficult for a student. I'm great at identifying each student's learning style (do they learn best by hearing problems explained, seeing problems done, doing problems themselves, or a combination thereof?) and teaching in the way that they will best absorb and understand the material.

Beyond standardized test prep, I'm particularly comfortable tutoring math (up through single variable Calculus) and essay-writing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I scored a perfect 36/36 on the Math section of the ACT (and a 35/36 overall score). I tutored my younger brother on the ACT Math and increased his score from 32 to 36 (and from a 27/36 to a 35/36 overall score). My most recent ACT Math student increased his score by two points after only two lessons. His score further increased by five points above his original score after four lessons.

Algebra 1

I've received perfect scores on all my standardized tests in Mathematics (SAT, SAT 2, ACT, AP Tests) and have helped other students to do the same! I enjoy working though difficult concepts, not just forcing memorization of formulas but helping students to understand their application and significance.

Elementary Math

I grew up as the oldest of 13 cousins in a large family, so I not only have extensive experience working with children, but I actually enjoy it. I enjoy making difficult concepts fun and relatable, so students aren't just memorizing but actually learning the application and significance of mathematical concepts.

Film

I applied and was accepted to film school at USC and Chapman University, and I have taken film production classes at UCLA and Yale. I have completed 8 internships in the entertainment industry in fields ranging from Production to Development to Representation at major companies such as ICM Partners and Blumhouse Productions. I'm particularly skilled in pre-production and editing with Final Cut Pro (and other platforms).

PSAT

I self studied and earned a high enough score on the PSAT to qualify me as a National Merit Finalist (to qualify as a Semi-Finalist in California required a score of at least 223 my year, and to become a Finalist requires an outstanding academic record, an endorsement by a school official, SAT scores that confirm their qualifying test performance, and additional essays and application components)

SAT Math

I self studied and received a 2380/2400 score on my SAT including a perfect score of 800/800 on my SAT Math section. I also received a perfect 800 score on my Math 2 SAT 2 Subject Test. My most recent SAT Math student increased her score by over 200 points after our first four lessons.

Writing

I've received A grades in all my Yale English classes, which involved writing essays in expository, persuasive, academic, and narrative (fiction and nonfiction) styles and a perfect score on my SAT writing section. In my college recommendation letter, my high school English teacher called me "the best writer [she] had seen in her 8 years teaching" at my college prep high school where 20% of graduates attend Ivy League schools.

Excellent tutor — Tyler was more than what I was looking for my daughter who experiences a high level of anxiety with Math. Tyler was patient, knowledgeable, punctual and very willing to determine my daughter's learning style. My daughter reported, "I absolutely love Tyler and want her to be my tutor- she was so patient with me". Tyler broke down Math to simple terms to where my daughter was able to understand and ...
