Bard College (History)
I love teaching History, Elementary Education, and Writing because I believe that these subjects are central to an excellent education. In High School, I received the "Excellence in AP US History" award and "Excellence in AP European History" award for my above 90% GPA in both classes. I also had some experience tutoring History and found it really rewarding because the student learns how to improve their writing, study habits, and critical thinking skills. Tutoring History, Elementary Education, and Writing are challenging pursuits that have encouraged me to be a lifelong learner; I love teaching them because they push us to think critically, become better writers, and see the power that our voices have. These subjects also create the frameworks that help us understand the world around us. I work to improve my skills everyday as a student and tutor in these subjects, and I want to help others see the importance of learning the core skills in History, Elementary Education, and Writing.
My Bachelor's Degree at Bard College and my work at the educational non-profit City Year have helped me develop a range of of tutoring styles. At Bard College, I learned that I benefited from open-ended questions and an independence to complete my work. So one of my tutoring styles is to ask the student how they would approach a problem without my help; this gives them a chance to learn from their actions. But at City Year, I worked in an elementary school classroom and learned that the students needed a lot of structure and guidance. This means that I also know how to create graphic organizers, essay outlines, and other structures that teach a student how to do one task very thoroughly. I can easily break down a math problem for a student and give them tangible benchmarks for completing the math problem or an essay. My aim when I tutor is to find the student's strengths, work on specific skills together, and then give them the freedom to try something on their own. I strive to understand the student as a person so that I can adapt my pedagogy and homework assignments to their specific learning needs, which puts them on the path towards success.
My base rate is $40/hour, and I will set up a price for doing online tutoring soon. I am also more than happy to discuss my past tutoring experiences and my pedagogy, so please contact me if you have any questions.
I am looking forward to meeting you and helping you succeed in your studies! I love teaching History, Elementary Education, and Writing because I believe that these subjects are central to an excellent education. In High
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked in a public elementary school for a year. While I was an assistant teacher for eleven fifth grade students and twenty-two fourth grade students, I learned about Common Core State Standards for both grades.
I know how to elementary math concepts through the Common Core strategies, and I can use alternative methods if necessary. My year as an assistant teacher showed me how to teach fractions, decimals, percents, word problems, measurements, exponents, PEMDAS, volume, division, multiplication, and more. As someone who worked with students with all types of learning strengths, I also know how to build great relationships with students and show them how to see math as important to their lives.
After I studied at the L'Institut de Tourraine, I traveled to Lyon, Marseille, and Toulouse. Virtually no people speak English in the South of France, so I had a chance to perfect my French skills when I was there. I traveled around Southern France for 2 weeks like this and got more of a taste for French culture. I also received high grades on all of my French classes in college. I graduated from Bard College with a 3.72 GPA.
I am familiar with a lot of different reading strategies to help students improve their comprehension skills. I know how to teach students about key words, topic sentences, persuasive essays, concluding sentences, example sentences, and more. Teaching students about these different types of sentences helps them break a passage down into paragraphs and gain the main idea from each paragraph. Not only does this help them understand the meaning of the passage, but it also shows them how to restate a question and provide evidence for their answers.
My first qualification is that I passed the tests for Wyzant. In high school, I received a 96 on the Global Regents. I was a History major at Bard College, and I event studied in Budapest. Studying in Central Europe exposed me to more ideas and perspectives on studying History. I am well read in colonial literature and feminist literature. I can draw from sources like Olympe de Gouges, Virginia Woolf, Audre Lorde, de Beauvoir, Bell Hooks, and more. And you can read some of my work on a blog called Tremr that shows my writing skills (search "Alexander Echelman when you're on Tremr).
