About Ching-Yu

I was trained as a general education elementary school teacher in Taiwan, specifically in Mandarin Chinese and literacy. I have experience both in Taiwan and United States as a Mandarin Chinese tutor, school teacher, and university project language facilitator. I am currently a Mandarin Chinese teacher at a private nurse school for children ages three to five years old and have the privilege of designing my own curriculum, integrated with the concept of art, music, science and math for young children.

Being trained from the top education programs in Taiwan, National Taipei Teacher's College (BA 3.8/4.0) and National Taiwan Normal University (MA, 4.0/4.0) and the top one ranking Curriculum and Instruction program in United Stated from University of Wisconsin-Madison, I am a highly-dedicated student, teacher, and researcher in the filed of education. I have enjoyed various types of teaching experiences in the past 13 years throughout my undergraduate, master’s and PhD programs both in Taiwan and United States. I have taught in various settings from homeschooling, nursery school, elementary school, to the undergraduate and graduate level while holding positions such as classroom teacher, teaching supervisor, guest lecturer, instructor, teaching assistant, and curriculum counselor. My students ranged from three years old to graduate students and faculty members (for science research), lawyer and business specialist.

Teaching Mandarin Chinese is one of my personal interests and passions aside of working on research. Throughout these varied teaching experiences I have learned that teaching is not just a top-down transfer of knowledge nor a simple process of delivering information from teacher to student, but an interactive and organic process that combines knowledge, interpretation, and experience while promoting critical thinking. For tutoring, I customize curriculum for individual student to fit in their specific needs, and implement the most suitable teaching strategies for student's learning styles. My main goal in teaching Chinese is to help my students connect their personal experiences and understanding of the world, to enhance and expand their perspective in the process of learning Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin Chinese is not just a language itself, but a gateway to explore Chinese culture, history, and society.

I am caring, warm, organized, and enjoy teaching with fun activities and engaging conversation for students in all ages. In my free time I enjoy photography, museums, cooking, and going outdoors (LOVE both mountains and oceans!). My schedule is flexible on weekday/weekend, day/night.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
