About Sophia

Hello! I am Sophia, a high school graduate from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. I will be attending New York University with an intended double major of Philosophy and Economics.

My love of tutoring stems from the time I worked with elementary school children in my neighborhood and taught them how to play the fife, a flute-like instrument. From there, I started tutoring academic subjects, working closely with their schedules and paying attention to their learning styles and needs. I enjoy working with younger children, especially, and I have the patience and understanding to guide them through such important learning years of their lives.

In high school, I succeeded in my coursework. My best subjects were history and English. I worked in the student writing center, where I edited and improved my fellow classmate's papers. Having written countless papers for classes and college applications, I know how to improve one's writing skills, vocabulary, as well as reading comprehension and proofreading skills. Along with the humanities, I am capable in the sciences and mathematics, especially given that my school is predominantly STEM oriented.

My goal as a tutor is to make my student feel prepared. I want my student to go into a school test or standardized exam feeling like he or she has all the tools necessary to succeed. I believe that challenging my student and even making the exam seem easy in comparison is the best way to do so. However, I would help my student at every step of the way as to not make him or her feel overwhelmed and stressed.

I tutor the SAT tests, the ACTs, SHSAT (specialized high school test in NYC), and the Regents exams.

Here are some of my qualifications and how I did on these tests as a student:

My ACT Overall Composite Score: 34 (English: 34, Math: 34, Reading: 35, Science: 33)
SAT Math: 800
Regents Integrated Algebra: 97
Regents Geometry: 100
Regents Algebra 2/Trigonometry: 96
Regents Global: 99
Regents US: 98
Please feel free to ask about any other Regents exams.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your academic goals! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am qualified in ACT Math because I have done well on this test, scoring a 34 on this section. I am well-versed in the subjects that appear on the test, such as pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

I also tutored fellow classmates and students in my high school and helped them prepare specifically for this section of the ACT. I know common mistakes and tips and tricks on improving their score.

Reading

I scored a 34 on both the Reading section of the ACT. I have the perspective of a student, and I know what it takes to achieve academic success.

Study Skills

As a student who has achieved success in her academic courses and extracurriculars, I have strong study skills myself. I understand that there are different types of learners: visual, auditory, read-write, and kinesthetic. To help my student study, I will see which type of learner he or she primarily is and use that to our advantage. For visual, I would use charts, graphs, online videos, and documentaries as study aids. For auditory, I would utilize reading aloud as well as videos. For read-write, I would help my student create study guides, flash cards, and definition sheets. And for kinesthetic, I would make learning a hands-on experience, such as through experiments, projects, and models.

No matter what type of learner my student is, I would advise him or her to study in a comfortable, clean, and somewhat quiet space. Technology use should be limited yet available only as a research tool. And finally, before a test, my student should give himself or herself time in ahead to prepare for it instead of cramming the topics the night before the test.
