About Van

I love teaching because I love the fields that I study. Besides over ten years of tutoring experience, I have taught the Classics at a middle school in New York, at Princeton University as an assistant instructor, and in Greece where I have organized summer programs in ancient Greek literature and philosophy.

I have learned Latin and Greek from the best Classics educators in the world and have incorporated their pedagogical methods into my own teaching style. This approach includes actually speaking Greek and Latin to my students and asking them questions in the target language. Numerous studies have shown that students learn more with this method of natural language learning.

After graduating from Columbia with a Classics major, I taught Latin at a middle school in New York before going to Princeton to get my PhD. I have been studying the Classics in Greek and Latin for over a decade and really like to share my passion for these texts and ideas with students. I have extensive experience teaching students and helping understand Latin and Greek effortlessly.

I am generally available to tutor on most days except Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have a B.A. in Classics from Columbia University. I'm currently a PhD candidate in Classics at Princeton University, specializing in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy. Before grad school, I taught Latin at a middle school in New York (the George Jackson Academy), and I also taught ancient Greek history as an assistant instructor at Princeton University. While at Princeton, I organized and led (with support from the University) a summer program in Greece for classics students to study Homer in ancient Greek.
