I am an American and my native language is English. However, my command of Russian has roots that are deep and wide. It was my original mother tongue, and for a period of ten years I worked and completed my education in Moscow. I became thoroughly assimilated into Russian culture, across its many highly stratified registers: from scholarly to daily parlance for business and social life.
I love to root a student's understanding of the Russian language through both an historical knowledge of etymology and popular culture (e.g, music and cinema).
Russian was my original native language, and through 10 years of permanent residence in Moscow that included a four-year degree in Russian language, I am fully bilingual. I have worked for over twenty years as a professional translator, during which I have also been a tutor.
For the past 20 years I have lectured and written for publication on Russian history and current world affairs.
I have worked in Photoshop since 1988, when the program was first released. I have continued to work weekly, now with Photoshop CS, for publishing clients.
Writing articles for publication based on the events I participated in – I was in Berlin when the wall went down; I participated in the stormy days of Gorbachev/Yeltsin/Putin transitions – and lecturing tours in the U.S. over the past 20 years.
My perfect command of Russian grammar, exceptionally broad vocabulary, perfect Moscow pronunciation and multi-layered knowledge of Russian life provides my students with a winning edge in mastering one of the grandest and most complex languages in the world. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Based on my participation in, and my scholarly study of, the stormy events of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the transitions in Russia across the Gorbachev-Yeltsin-Putin periods, I have lectured at leading universities in London, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition, I successfully underwent a trial by fire through leading monthly bilingual current event debates throughout my residence in Moscow, and in periodic speaking tours to Kiev, Ukraine. Not everyone has a natural talent for public speaking, but everyone can be taught the basic tools and craftsmanship of successful public presentations.
English is my native language, however, Russian was my original native tongue. Ten years of permanent residence in Moscow for work and education allowed me become fully fluent in Russian to the level that I am now bilingual. Over the past four years I have tutored students of my neighboring New York University. A special method I use to help students to overcome the vast and complex nature of the Russian language is the use of cinema and music.
