About Ryan

With three degrees in anthropology--bachelors, masters, and PhD--and an extensive publication record in top anthropological journals, I am well poised to assist you in any phase of your anthropological learning. Studying for a test? Designing a research project? Readying a manuscript for publication? I am your man.

I aim to motivate students to see anthropology as a craft—a set of tools and methods for examining and shaping the cultural relations that constitute them—and to help them integrate this craft into their careers and everyday lives.

I like to criticize important theories and methods into “tool” metaphors—typically one per session—that address diverse career interests and are portable to life outside the classroom. For instance, my basic introduction to “Gender, femininity, and performance” concludes with a tool (Theater mask: how to un-perform a stereotype) that conveys practical applications of performance theory. If you study with me I promise you will find the material engaging and will do everything I can to distill its relevance to your goals and aspirations.

I would be happy to go over the subject in which you need assistance so that I can come up with a lesson outline before the first meeting. I earned my PhD in anthropology from the University of Oxford in 2013.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a PhD in Anthropology from Oxford and experience teaching Introduction to Anthropology at NMSU- Carlsbad.
