About Nathaniel

Hi all!

My previous experience includes writing tutoring, for which I was recommended by faculty at my high school (Bard High School Early College, Manhattan) to help fellow students with papers of all kinds, for class and for college prep. I also spent four years teaching tennis to kids age 5-16 through a program in northwest Connecticut, and was promoted to the position of senior instructor (leading the small team running the program) two years in.

I seek to foster a productive but totally relaxed environment through one-on-one, in-person sessions. I remember my days being tutored--what worked for me, what didn't, what was terribly boring and what got me engaged--so I feel a particular empathy for students struggling with a particularly tricky subject, or trying their best to ace a test designed in all the harshest ways. I'm all about 'working smart, not hard', focusing on fundamental skills and personal development that lay the groundwork for intellectual development, and only resorting to by-the-books "teaching to the test" when necessary (e.g. the SAT).

Writing is my foremost specialty--class papers, college essays, SAT Writing section, creative, etc--and English. If you need help whipping up a killer essay for a particularly difficult class, I'm your guy! I'm still fresh enough out of school to provide help in most major subjects, such as math or history. I have a particular affinity for physics and the social sciences, and knowledge in more specific and unrelated disciplines such as computer programming and art history.

A survivor of the New York City school system myself, I'm graduating from NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study having been placed on the Dean's List on multiple occasions, and with my writing published in school-wide publications.

Thank you for your consideration.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

I played baseball for 14 years in the West Side Little League, and for three years competed at the state level in Connecticut. I took part in short training programs: in Troy, NY with the Tri-City ValleyCats minor league team, and the New York Mets at the old Shea Stadium. When I reached high school, I was invited to the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour (though I chose not to participate).

Classics

Upon graduating from college, I prepared a colloquium which juxtaposed far-ranging classic texts--from Aristotle's Poetics to the Daodejing to Descartes' Meditations--into a cohesive exploration of the philosophy of art. Having studied Latin for seven years in middle and high school, I developed a deep connection to Greco-Roman literature and culture, and in college I studied Eastern classics such as the Quran and The Analects. I have a particular affinity for Shakespeare, whose work I dove deep into during a semester abroad in London.

Tennis

For four years (2010-2013) I taught tennis to children age 5-16, under the Salisbury Recreation Commission Youth Tennis Program in Salisbury, Connecticut. I taught the fundamentals of the sport to the younger age groups, and more advanced technical skills to the older students, while mixing everything in with fun games. In 2012 I was promoted from instructor to senior instructor.
