University of Virginia (Biology, English)
University of Pennsylvania (MEd)
After receiving degrees in Biology and Literature from the University of Virginia, I joined the 2011 corp of Teach For America. During my two years, I taught fifth-grade science at a charter middle school in Camden, NJ. During my time there, I earned my M.Ed. in Urban Education from the University of Pennsylvania. Following my corp term, I took a job teaching social studies to fifth graders in Washington, DC, then rolled up with them to teach sixth-grade science the following year. During my four years of teaching, I planned cross-curricular lessons that aligned with common core reading and writing standards in order to prepare my students for state and common core testing.
While I taught social studies then science at my second school, I also worked with students in push guided reading groups as well as remedial guided reading groups. During my time as a teacher, I also ran a science club, a STEM service learning club which was funded by a small grant, the student newsletter, and the student yearbook. While I currently am no longer teaching, I am working with a charter school company in NYC.
I taught science, including Biology concepts, and was a Biology major in college.
I taught cross-curricular courses and also majored in English in college.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a biology major at the University of Virginia. During my studies, I completed classes across biology disciplines, including, but not limited to, ecology, immunology, and morphology. I also taught science for three years to middle school students, which included an elective about the science of viruses (triggered by the Ebola outbreak) for my "push" students.
While at the University of Virginia, I majored in literature, which allowed me to develop as a critical reader and analytical writer. I took classes ranging from Medieval literature to contemporary authors. I also studied British writers in London and completed two independent studies within this major.
While my English major at the University of Virginia allowed me to hone my grammar skills, I was able to teach grammar to middle school students as a teacher.
