University of Maryland (English)
I began tutoring as a high school student and continued as a writing tutor for four years at the University of Maryland. After graduating, I joined Teach for America and have been teaching high school English and Special Education for two years in Newark, New Jersey. I am a certified Secondary English and Special Education teacher, and have worked with experienced and award-winning teachers to create successful high school English and Special Education curricula.
Teaching and tutoring is what I do best. Whether a student simply needs somebody to proofread an essay, or is deeply struggling to understand complex grammar or literary concepts, I will work with each student until he/she feels confident with the material. I live for the moment that I see the expression on my students' faces that tells me they finally "get it." I believe that hard work pays off, and I'm always willing to put in the work my students' deserve.
As an English tutor, I have helped prepare students for the SAT, the ACT, and the PARCC tests. I have taught them how to draft college essays, resumes, personal statements, and job and internship applications. I developed a high school English curriculum that prepares students for the kind of reading and writing that will be expected of them in college. At the same time, I created a high school English Special Education curriculum that breaks down the components of reading, writing, and critical analysis to meet each of my students' needs. I love everything about English, so much so that I've dedicated my entire to career to it. Helping students learn about and love English as much as I do is my jam.
I'll be available to tutor beginning July 1st of 2016. Feel free to contact me to learn more about my experiences and qualifications as a tutor and teacher. I can't wait to work with you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
