I discovered my talent for teaching while helping fellow students with their homework. Since then, I have developed a reputation for my ability to help students complete homework and prepare for tests. Given that I am currently a college-level student at NYU, I have found joy in helping many younger students with school and applying to private institutions. I have aided in assisting students raise their ISEE test scores, common core testing scores, and in creating successful applications to many of the top prep schools in the nation.
I am confident I can help with all middle school and elementary subjects. I believe that a good foundation to a students education is formed during these years, and would love to help students master these subjects.
I have experience tutoring k-6th grade students and have helped improve many grades in English, Math, History, Social Studies, Spanish, and Science. I am also able to help instill good study habits that have proved to be beneficial to me in my academics. I am able to help all types of students, whether they be struggling and looking to catch up, or confident and looking to get ahead. Overall, I am a patient, diligent, and eager to help students truly master their studies.

Common Core,

Common Core

I am familiar with common core standards and the most effective ways for students to learn them. I have tutored students before with common core, and also have the advantage of going through some of the common core system in my own education. My strategies will help students go in depth when learning a new topic and looking for evidence to prove their position. Common core emphasizes true understanding and application as opposed to pure memorization. I recall one student who had difficulties in mathematics, and after our common core lesson regarding the circumference of a huge cup of coffee, and after he thanked me for my patience and new method of teaching.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have spent the past two years tutoring 1st-5th graders after school, and have spent 100+ hours assisting teachers after school with lesson plans and activities. I believe in paying individual attention to each student so he or she can truly understand what they are learning. I want to help each child form a solid foundation in all elementary subjects. There are certain methods of tutoring I use specifically for elementary students. I am patient, plan ahead, and do my best to make lessons fun and entertaining. I have helped the youngest of my students (pre-K) grasp the fundamentals of learning their letters, numbers and colors, through helping students of all ages with their math skills, reading fluency and comprehension, writing skills, learning basic note-taking and study skills, along with all other matters related to elementary education.

Handwriting

I have helped two younger students with improving their handwriting. Additionally, I taught those students how to write in cursive. Because of my previous experience and the many tips and tricks I know to make writing a little easier, I believe I am quite qualified to teach handwriting.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Given that I myself have challenged myself many times in the world of academia, I have perfected my study skills. I believe organization and planning ahead for a test are huge aspects of being prepared. Additionally, I am able to teach methods of studying such as creating flashcards or study guides. I am able to teach different students how to create valuable study tools, such as the Oxford note taking method. My primary goal is to figure out what way each student learns best, and implement the most effective ways of studying from there.

I have successfully tutored one of my students with the ISEE test for entrance to private high school. I am able to teach students test taking strategies such as time management during the timed portions of the exam, process of elimination, and proper essay format. Additionally, I am able to help students with any concepts they do not understand that appear on the test questions. I have ISEE several test books of my own that I plan to use for my students.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

My son Lucas loved his first session with Shannon. Lucas said she taught him new words and how to apply comma. I am hoping that she can help Lucas improves his writing. Too bad her schedule doesn't work for us.
